The large-scale operation was dis- covered in an isolated building on a farm in west Wicklow as officers car- ried out routine sampling of fuel in nearby vehicles. Garda from Baltinglass and the Na- tional Drugs Unit were called in and seized more than 400 cannabis plants and hi-tech cultivation equipment. Investigators estimate the herbal cannabis had a potential street value of 250,000, which could be pro- duced every two to three months. A 36-year-old Irish man was arrest- ed at the scene near Donard, Co Wicklow, and detained at Naas Garda Station for questioning under the Drug Trafficking Act. Garda have recently been targeting cannabis-growing houses under Oper- ation Nitrogen. Officers have found three other cannabis factories in recent weeks in Meath, Galway and Donegal and seized almost 1,500 plants, which could produce drugs with an estimated street value of 760,000. In the last three years, cannabis fac- tories have also been detected in hous- es, many near the Border, where Asian gangs moved in to grow the plants. Fine Gael justice spokesman Charlie Flanagan said the country is faced with a new and significant problem. While there have been other similar discoveries made by garda, the scale of this illegal operation is a seriously worrying development, he said. The question arises as to how many other similar cannabis-growing opera- tions are located around the country. Elsewhere, two men, age 22 and 38, were being questioned yesterday over the seizure of heroin worth 1.2mil- lion. Garda discovered the haul after swooping on two houses in the Kil- clare estate in Tallaght.
