The memory of last augusts all-Ireland quarter-final embar- rassment will have motivated Dublin and they came good with revenge of sorts. Eamon Fennell pointed after just 20 seconds, setting Dublin on their way to an opening round allianz league win that partly makes up for the 17-point Croke Park humiliation. Both sides hit the field with ex- perimental teams but that will not lessen the value of victory over the all-Ireland champions. Boss Pat Gilroy said: It was a good win but were not running away with ourselves. Kerry were away on holidays for a while recently and you could probably see it in their play at times out there. It is February and its only one win. Midfielder Fennell repaid Gil- roys faith in him with a second point early in the first half as the sides were level at 0-3 apiece af- ter 20 minutes in a tense tie. Kerry ace Paul Galvin and cor- ner-forward Paul OConnor hit 0-5 between them in the first half. But Flynns goal just before the break separated the teams at half- time as Dublin led 1-6 to 0-6. and the leinster champions were in dreamland when they stretched their advantage to five at the three quarter mark, with Flynn, 1-2 overall, and debutant Kevin McManamon both on tar- get in an impressive display. Galvin took his tally to 0-4 be- fore Barry John Keane reduced the margin to one with a Kingdom goal. But another Dublin debu- tant, Michael Mcauley, struck an insurance score for Dublin. Captain trevor Mortimer was the hero turned villain as Mayo got their Division 1 campaign off to a flier with a 2-14 to 1-10 win over rivals Galway. Mortimer gave a strong display that included a second-half goal to ensure Galway boss Joe Kernan got off to a losing start. But Mortimers day was soured as he was sent off late on with victory already in the bag. new Galway boss Joe Kernan watched his team fall 0-5 to 0-11 down at half-time with Michael Meehan grabbing a consolation 51st minute goal. GAA NATIONAL LEAGUE John hayes was Corks super sub with a dramatic last- minute point in scotstown to see off Monaghan 3-13 to 3-12. a whopping 11 first-half wides left Monaghan up against it and they ultimately paid for their profligacy as Cork stole victory late on. those early Monaghan wides meant that the hosts trailed 1-6 to 3-4 at half-time when they should have led. paddy Kelly and paul Kerrigan, two, hit the Cork goals while paul Finlay, tommy Freeman and Darren hughes hit the net for Monaghan. the sides were level at 3-7 during the second half and while Monaghan led by two late on Cork scores from paudie Kissane, Kerrigan and hayes won it for the visitors. Meanwhile, in Division 2, new Westmeath boss Brendan hackett watched his side go down 1-13 to 0-9 Donegal in Mullingar. hackett blamed the defeat, sealed by Kevin Cassidys brilliant 38th- minute goal, on having just six training sessions beforehand. elsewhere, Down stunned Kildare with a 1-16 to 0-8 win, paul McComiskey grabbing their 29th-minute goal. Meath and Laois both won on saturday against armagh and tipperary. The group owned by private equity company Terra Firma and counting Robbie Williams (pictured) and Coldplay among its artists posted a 2billion loss for the year to March 2009 last week. according to one report, EMI boss Elio leoni-Sceti is planning to strip millions of euro from the com- panys costs and rapidly expand its digital operations, after it cut more than 2,000 jobs in 2008. The plans involve growing digital music sales to 75 per cent of music sales within five years, the report said. Terra Firma paid 4.8billion for EMI in early 2007, leaving it with liabilities of 4.35billion last March. The huge loss came after more than 1.25billion in one-off write- downs and restructuring charges. The company is currently suing Citigroup, claiming it misrepresented facts over the sale of EMI. a RetaiLeRs group has demanded a 10 per cent rebate on all commercial rates from local authorities. Retail ireland wants them to pay back 10 per cent of last years rates bill and to freeze increases in the charges to retail businesses. Director torlach Denihan said, over the past year, 30,000 retail jobs have been lost and the sector is struggling to avoid more job losses. a lOOPHOlE that allowed investors to avoid capital gains tax by creating artificial losses has cost the Exchequer 400million. according to The Sunday Business Post, the scheme, involving 26 people here, was outlawed in Britain in 2007. last weeks Finance Bill will close the loophole, in which investors set up futures contracts linked to the value of Government gilts. tHE QE2 cruise ship could be sold off as its dubai owner tries to ease its 16billion debts.
