The crew of car ferry Oscar Wilde called for help just before 7.30pm on Tuesday to report a fire in the engine room. The vessel, operated by Irish Ferries and cap- tained by Mike McKenna (pictured), had been in dry dock in Falmouth, England, for its annual refit and had left a few hours earlier with 113 crew aboard. Falmouth Coastguard sent out its tug, Anglian Princess, and requested the launch of two lifeboats. Three more tugs from Falmouth docks were also launched. A fire- fighting team was also airlifted to the ship by helicopter. Coastguard officer James Instance said: The master called us as soon as he was aware of the fire, having anchored two miles off Falmouth. He said, the fire in the engine room was suppressed by the fire systems on board. We put into place procedures that we have tried and tested in exercises with The Maritime Incident Response Group (MIRG) firefighting teams throughout the UK. The fire appears to be contained at the moment. Irish Ferries confirmed there were no other people on board apart from the crew, who have all been account- ed for. No-one was injured in the incident and cause of the outbreak is not yet known.
