Fine Gael councillor Gerry Breen spoke and voted against the proposal at the council meeting when it was approved by a shower of muppets, led by Labours Andrew Montague. I will not be associated with or take flak for this stupidity, he said. Over the past year, I have seen the cycling extremists take centre stage in the traffic affairs of the council. Their unstated aims seem to be removing all car traffic from the city. Seemingly everything these days can be run un- der the guise of health and safety. It is important councillors take into account all the interested parties and stakeholders in coming to decisions and this speed limit in my opinion is neither fair or balanced. I will seek to have it reversed, said Cllr Breen. The controversial speed limit, pro- posed at a Dublin City Council meet- ing on October 5, took just 30 minutes of discussion before it was passed, a minute for every kilometre motorists are permitted to drive per hour. During the meeting, 34 councillors voted in favour; only three Cllr Breen, fellow Fine Gael councillor Bill Tormey and Independent Nial Ring voted against. However, according to Cllr Ring, everybody jumped on the slow mov- ing bandwagon once they heard the public outcry. He said traffic on the quays was a nightmare since the limit came into force, as motorists could not go above third gear, while the promise of a free run of green lights he described as a red herring. Cllr Ring said the Fine Gael group brought an emergency motion at a meeting last Monday calling for the new limit to be lifted pending an ex- amination of the reasons for, and steps which led to this decision. But he added they voted for the scheme in October. So why do they need an examination of it? Does that mean they werent paying attention? he asked.
