Paediatrician Dr Sabah Al-Zayyat will face a General Medical Council misconduct hearing this month in relation to her treatment of baby Peter Connelly in 2007. New 3km canal cycle path plan DUBLIN City Council has granted planning permission for a new 3km cycle track along the Grand Canal. The route will stretch from Portobello to Ossory Road, crossing the Liffey at the Samuel Beckett Bridge. It will encourage more people to cycle, said Labour councillor Kevin Humphreys. Experts warned one in five people is blasting their ears with levels of 100 decibels (db) or more the equivalent of a pneumatic drill 10ft away. The European Commission also fears one in ten 30-year-olds will have to wear a hearing device within the next decade as a result. A survey of 1,000 people found 51 per cent of MP3 users were listening to their players at volume levels above 89db for up to two hours a day. Hear- ing experts recommend the 60/60 rule to protect your hearing listening to your personal music de- vice for 60 minutes at 60 per cent volume. Medic and television presenter Dr Mark Hamil- ton launched Hearing Awareness Week to encour- age people to take care of their ears. Noise-induced hearing loss is generally prevent- able so it is important that people are aware of the damage they can do and take steps to protect it. Ignoring it can be detrimental as they can do fur- ther damage from pumping up the volume. Singer Julie Feeney launched the campaign with a lunchtime gig on Dawson Street. A roadshow will see the Hidden Hearing mobile clinic visiting Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Belfast and free tests at its 57 stores. Flu vaccine deadline set THE swine flu vaccination programme will finish on March 31, it was announced yesterday. Anyone in a high-risk group who has not yet been vaccinated is advised to visit an HSE clinic. To date, 800,000 people have been vaccinated. While the rate of illness in the community has decreased... we cannot rule out possible subsequent waves, said the HSEs Dr Pat Doorley. Getting a vaccine is the best way to protect you and your family from swine flu, he advised.
