This year we decided to test-drive cruising for the first time on The Holiday Show and you know something? I like it! We cruised the Med on the MSC Splendida and it really was splendid. What do you like about it? Theres a well- known saying that cruises are for Over-fed, Newly Wed or Nearly Dead. But no, this is completely wrong. The MSC Splendida is a brand new ship and as my co-presenter Ciara would say it is very bling. They say it caters for everyone and it really does. I really liked the cruise because once youre on board you cant help but unwind and relax. Even though I thought I might get cabin fever the ships are so big you could explore for a week and still get lost. Is it a tourist trap? Not at all, if anything you feel really well looked after and even though there are thousands of people on board a cruise ship there is always a little nook to have to yourself. A nice sun lounger on the deck with a good book and you cant go wrong. If its real peace and quiet youre after, the days the ship is at port will suit you down to the ground. The majority of passengers disembark so if you want an entire cruise ship to yourself you can pretty much have it. Who would the holiday suit? Cruising is either a love it or hate it holiday and its definitely worth giving it a go to see which side of the fence youre on. A lot of people who like it will rarely go on any other type of holiday and now I can see why. We feature a cruise in both our Family and Out of this World episodes. On MSC Cruises kids go for free and with all the activities on board I cant think of an easier and better family holiday. How do you get there? MSC cruises go from all over the world so whether you want to cruise around the Med, Pacific or Caribbean its just a case of catching a flight to the port that suits you best. How long could you stay for a grand? A grand goes a long way on a cruise, especially when all your food and entertainment is included. You can get a one week MSC Lirica Western Med cruise leaving from Genoa this April from as little as 580. Flights will cost you about 200 on top of that. Another cruise they have that caught my eye sails for ten nights from New York City to Sydney to Charlottetown to Quebec to Halifax to Newport and back to New York for 945. With only 55 left in the pot youd have to swim to New York to catch it but I reckon it might be worth it! What would make your visit memorable? As well as the cruise ships themselves being amazing, the destinations that you get to visit are really impressive and whats best is there is absolutely no effort required in getting to them. You go to sleep and wake up with a new view in a new part of the world every morning. When should I go? Cruising is always best in the sunshine when you can swim on deck and soak up some rays, looking out at the moving ocean beneath you. Is it possible to get away from the crowds? When the ship arrives into the port everyone disembarks for the day. If youre not interested in sight-seeing you can always stay on board and have the ship to yourself and if you want to see the sights, instead of being herded around with the masses, its always a good idea to give the organised trips a miss and instead grab a taxi from the port into the local town to have a quiet wander around yourself.
