A need for speed? Slowly does it: A 30kmh sign I was driving to work this morning observing the new (ridiculous) 30kmh speed limit. As I was trickling along I was overtaken by a senior citizen on a motorised cart. Surely the law applies to these type of vehicles as well. We all have to get to where we are going but please could Dublin City Council or Minister Gormley do something to put an overall restriction on all motorised vehicles and not just the usual offenders, petrol and diesel. Just because there is no road tax on these vehicles, it doesnt mean that they cant cause harm. Garrett Concannon, Dunboyne Does Andrew Montague really think a 30kmh speed limit will have a beneficial effect on road safety and the environment in our city? If a motorist tries to keep to the 50kmh speed limit, he is liable to be the subject of much frustration to the cars behind and, as I have often witnessed, to be overtaken at every opportunity usually on a bus lane. Consider also for many cars the effort of driving at 30kmh involves the use of a lower gear than normal, which results in more exhaust emissions for cyclists and pedestrians to swallow. The actual result of this folly? An improper use of Garda resources and, of course, extra revenue from all of the fines that will be issued to the already over- taxed motorist. Derek The news about Glaxos proposed job cuts makes for depressing reading. This company which is to report profits of $10bn is to cut costs at a time when many people are already struggling, just so it can increase its already huge profits. As Minister Dempsey said, the innocent have nothing to fear, so how could they possibly object! Alan H It says it all about modern society and capitalism when these companies sack thousands of workers, not because they are making a loss, but because their profit growth is down. The recession has given other companies the excuse to do the same and up sticks to Asia where working conditions are years behind. They expect us to pay for their products but dont want to us to work for them when they can have poorer, vulnerable people do the job for a slave wage. This is a very slippery slope. The only option open to us is to boycott companies who engage in this practice. Disgruntled consumer I am so annoyed by people petitioning against the new body scanners. I would much rather have my privacy violated than be blown into a red mist. Perhaps we should let the liberal petitioners travel with the terrorists, and those of us willing to forfeit our liberty can travel in safety. ae traeller, Dublinae traeller, Dublin Sendusyour txt That chav Terry and his actions are symptomatic of the type of lout that has infected the once great game of soccer! Jack Id like to pay respect to Wayne Bridge for his silence over the alleged affair with his ex-girlfriend and John Terry. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the money-grabbing Ms Perroncel, who will be trading decency and integrity for financial gain. DC I never thought I would say this but... Jim Corr should stick to music! His harping on about conspiracy theories and man- made pandemics on the new Brendan OConnor show this weekend had me falling off the couch with laughter! L, Dublin Congratulations to Dublin City Council for introducing the new 30kmh limit, and shame on the AA for attacking it. What is so wrong with introducing a measure which will reduce road deaths and injuries? The AA seem to forget a lot of its members (like me) are also pedestrians and cyclists. But I wasnt going to visit Mickey and Minnie Mouse I was heading to Zephyrhills to learn how to skydive! Yes, for some crazy reason I thought throwing myself out of a plane from 15,000ft would be more fun! And it was not only was I enjoying the beautiful weather, I was getting the most amazing views whilst floating under canopy back to the ground. Model Vanessa Perroncel the former lover of Terrys England team-mate Wayne Bridge is at the heart of a bidding war to tell her side of the story. Mr Clifford said he was in talks with at least six media outlets who want her to expose more revelations about father of two Terry, who re- portedly paid for her to have an abortion. The 250,000 offer is just the lat- est bid. I am in negotiations on her behalf, said celebrity publicist Mr Clifford. Its a story that everyones talking about and its a story that obviously all the papers and the television net- works are very, very keen to get to the bottom of and find out what the truth is. He insisted 28-year-old Ms Per- roncel was overwhelmed by the attention she has received since news of her affair with married Chelsea and England captain Terry broke. She has never spoken to a single journalist and shes all over all the papers with all kinds of allegations, some of which she said were true and some of which she said arent true, he added. Former Chelsea defender Bridge, who now plays for Manchester City, was with Ms Perroncel for three years until they split six months ago. They have a young son together. Meanwhile, England boss Fabio Capello was believed to be weigh- ing up 29-year-old Terrys future as captain yesterday ahead of the teams World Cup bid in South Af- rica. It is believed Mr Capello will have the final say, not the English Foot- ball Association. index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
