Sky made broadcasting history yesterday, airing the first-ever live 3D sports event, as Arsenal hosted Manchester United in three glorious dimensions. The live broadcast from the Emirates Sta- dium in north London was beamed to nine pubs across the UK and Ireland, including Fagans pub in Drumcondra. Fagans owner Eamon OMalley de- scribed it as amazing. You have to see it to believe it. It makes a huge difference, he said after the match. The younger generation thought it was absolutely amazing. The graphics, the game itself everything is so much clearer. Its definitely the future, and Im not even into technology. Mr OMalley, a Man United fan, was equally impressed with the scoreline, a 3-1 away win against title rivals, Arsenal. He also confirmed there were no 3-D re- lated injuries caused by punters trying to avoid wayward clearances or protruding graphics. One person who didnt enjoy the game so much was Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Al- munia, who became the first footballer to score in a live 3D broadcast after touching a cross from Uniteds Portuguese winger Nani into his own net. Watching the 3D broadcast at the Emir- ates Stadium, Sky Sports director of oper- ations Darren Long, said: This is a historic day for us, this is not a trick... this is nor- mal, this is where were going to go. People now feel they can sit in their own homes and view things in a way they could only do if they came to the stadium them- selves. He added: Its like having a front row seat that moves around the pitch all the time.
