News Friday, January 29, 2010 D Leaflet: The Townshend warning The Who is targeted by child group AN anti-paedophile group is sending leaflets to people living near a venue where The Who are to play, saying guitarist Pete Townshend is a sex offender. The flyers state that the musician will be at large and feature a picture of him with his age, height and weight. They say he was registered as a sex offender in his home country in 2003 for an offence related to child pornography. The 64-year-old was cautioned that year for accessing a website that advertised child pornography. He was placed on the sex offenders register in the UK for five years but was not convicted of any related offence. The leaflets from a group called Protect Our Children Inc have been sent to residents near the Miami Dolphins stadium. The Who are due to perform at the US venue during the Super Bowls half-time show on February 7. Earlier, Child AbuseWatch said the decision to use The Who showed a blatant disregard for American family values. Townshend said in 2003 he had accessed the website as part of research for his campaign against child pornography, having been abused himself. Photo? Make it snappy By Miles Erwin Careful: Israel Gonzalez swims alongside the crocodile, photographed by his diving colleague David Doubilet, inset Pictures: David Doubilet/Barcroft The day divers swam with a crocodile and lived to tell the tale DAREDEVIL diver Israel Gonzalez takes his life in his hands to be snapped alongside this deadly crocodile. Swimming close enough to count her razor sharp teeth, the 31-year-old is dwarfed by the 3.35m (11ft) long, 454kg (1,000lb) beast. Together with photographer David Doubilet, he spent two hours swimming with the fe- male croc as she returned to her nest on one of 50 or so islands just off the Cuban coast. This crocodile exhibited very benign behaviour for such a no- torious predator, said Doubilet, 63. As a wildlife photography opportunity, this was extremely exciting to capture not only the rare and overlooked American crocodile but also to run the gauntlet with the animal. Honestly, after the initial rush when we encountered the crocodile, our levels of fear dropped quite considerably. Most people are unaware there are crocodiles that live in the Americas. There are only about 1,500 American croco- diles living in Florida and the same number across Central America and South America, putting them in the endangered animals category. Gliding alongside the croc, the divers were aware that at any minute the situation could turn life-threatening. We had no protection on us. No sticks, no harpoons, noth- ing that would have saved our lives had the crocodiles turned nasty, said Doubilet. We were careful to know our limits and not to stress the crea- ture. The crocodile is distinctive from its American alligator cousin by its longer, thinner snout, lighter colour and two longer teeth on its lower jaw that are visible when the mouth is shut. Some males can reach up to 6m (20ft) in length and weigh in at more than 600kg (2,000lb).
