D Friday, January 29, 2010 News Prison for mother whose boys lost 194 school days A WIDOW who failed to send her two sons to school has been jailed for a month. The woman, with an address in Tal- laght, had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of failing to cause her two named sons to attend Killinarden Community School. Sentencing the middle-aged woman to the maximum available sentence, Judge James McDonnell said the case was quite shocking and was one of the worst he had ever come across. An educational welfare officer told the court the older boy was 14 and the younger boy 12. The officer said the older boy had missed 111 out of 132 days between October 2008 and Sep- tember 2009 and the younger boy had missed 83 days out of 105. The judge said he was appalled by the circumstances of the case. He said: We have a situation where two boys are socially completely out of control and are both lacking basic education. Where are these boys go- ing to end up in their mid-teens and their early adulthoods? He asked the probation service to notify the HSE of the sentence so that care arrangements could be arranged. Nurse found dead from stab wound A ROMANIAN woman was stabbed to death yesterday after an apparent row with a man. The nurse, aged in her 30s, was knifed and died at a hotel complex in south Dublin. Garda found the dead woman in a suite on the Irish Management Institute (IMI) campus, Sandyford, at about 7am after people in neighbouring rooms and apartments reported a disturbance. A Romanian man in his 40s, who had suffered serious stab injuries, was also found in the building. He was taken to St Vincents Hospital and underwent emergency surgery for knife wounds. It is understood neither the man nor the dead woman were attending any courses at the IMI and the woman may have been visiting the man.
