D Friday, January 29, 2010 SPORT 23 A MAN has been charged with throwing a coin at Craig Bellamy during Wednesdays highly charged Manchester derby. Adam Teese, 26, from Greater Manchester, is accused of throwing a missile on to the pitch during the Carling Cup semi-final at Old Trafford, police said. City star Bellamy fell to the ground after he was struck by a coin in the 50th minute as he went to take a corner. Teese is due to appear at Trafford Magistrates Court on February 9. Another man has been charged for trying to enter the ground while drunk. Another man, 35- year-old Paul Rooney Nelson, will appear at the same court two days later. SOCCER PREMIER LEAGUE Arrest in Bellamy coin case City bid farewell to Robinho as he returns to Brazil By Paul Murphy MANCHESTER City have allowed Robinho to join Santos on loan, making it almost certain their record signing will never kick another ball for them. In a short statement on their website, City effectively declared their 32.5million investment in the temperamental forward a failure by allowing him to join his former club until August. It ended a turbulent 18 months at Eastlands for the 25-year-old. Robinho has never given any impression of being comfortable in Manchester since joining City in a British record deal in August, 2008. And, following his recent criticism of manager Roberto Mancini who left Robinho out of his squad for Wednesdays Carling Cup semi-final defeat at Old Trafford at the players own request it is unlikely he would return if the Italian was still at the helm next season. It is a disappointing exit for a player who was Citys top scorer last term but whose 12 appearances this season have yielded just a single goal against Scunthorpe on Sunday. Robinho is someone who needs to be playing regularly and we wish him well for the period of his loan, said Mancini, who knew the player wanted to leave to secure his place in Brazils squad for this summers World Cup. At the same time as the finishing touches were being applied to the Robinho deal, City were expressing an interest in Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson. Boro boss Gordon Strachans initial reaction to an offer believed to be around 5million was to say Johnson is going nowhere. But the former England Under-21 international has asked to be allowed speak to City and an improved offer to the Championship club is likely to seal the switch. Mancini, meanwhile, is working hard to raise spirits following the Carling Cup exit at the hands of bitter local rivals United. Looking ahead to this weekends Premier League home game against crisis club Portsmouth, Mancini said: Everyone is down but we have to lift our heads. Things change. We play Portsmouth on Sunday, we are still in the FA Cup and I feel the top four is within our grasp. Arrivederci: City boss Roberto Mancini has allowed Robinho, left, to join Santos on loan Transfer talk LENS forward Aruna Dindane, who has been on loan at Portsmouth this season, has emerged as a potential transfer target for Birmingham boss Alex McLeish. But reports that a 4million transfer for Didane (pictured) has already been struck with the French club appear to be premature. McLeish has confirmed his interest in Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko but may not be able to afford his wages. Pav and Dindane on McLeish wanted list TOTTENHAM have won the race to sign Monaco striker Eidur Gudjohnsen (pictured) on loan for the rest of the season. Spurs beat neighbours West Ham to capture the former Barcelona and Chelsea forward and manager Harry Redknapp last night told the BBC he was confident the deal for the 31-year-old was about to be finalised. The chairman has probably done a deal for Eidur. We spoke to him the other day, said Redknapp. Weve taken him on loan until the end of the season to see how it goes. Harry hammering out Eidur sanction AC MilAN vice-president Adriano Galliani has insisted unsettled striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will not be leaving the Serie A club this month. o MANchESTER United have confirmed the capture of Fulham defender chris Smalling. The 20-year-old completed his medical at Old Trafford outfit yesterday and will link up with the Red Devils this summer on a four-year contract. chris is an extremely talented young defender, who we have been monitoring for some months, said Sir Alex Ferguson. o PORTSMOUTHS pitiful plight is not far off total disaster as they lurch from one crisis to another. And matters are not going to improve on Sunday with a long, fruitless trek to Eastlands in store. it will definitely be a case of pay up on Pompey for bookies as they face a City side smarting from their Carling Cup semi-final exit to Wayne Rooneys late goal. City are 10/11 with Paddy Power to be leading at half-time and full- time while more than 3.5 goals is 2/1 with Victor Chandler and and Boylesports. Pompeys goals against record isnt bad but theyre set to sell Younes Kaboul to former club Spurs and hes been their best defender this term. Carlos Tevez is 10/11 with Paddy Power to extend his purple patch in front of goal by scoring at any time. Sadly, there are no odds yet about Pompey being the first club to field a team of loanees and free agents. oooo ARSENAl may be about to embark on one of those runs which undermines their season and injury to classy Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen seriously weakens a defence which must contain Rooney on Sunday. Manchester United, though, are without banned Rio Ferdinand at the Emirates take Sky Bets 12/5 on the draw. oooo JUSTiNE HENiN was our 9/2 selection to win the womens title at the Australian Open and is in the final against Serena Williams. its not really advised, but the American is a fraction under evens to win and the punters lacking bottle can make a small profit by hedging their bet in case Williams wins. THE TIPSTER LEAGUE OF IRELAND FAI demand Coughlan give up Cork THE FAI last night called on Cork City owner Tom Coughlan to immediately release control of the club to local consortium Quintas after it was confirmed he would step down as chairman yesterday. On Wednesday, the High Court dismissed an action brought by Coughlan to overturn a 12-month FAI suspension on him from football activities for bringing the game into disrepute due to his handling of the club last season. He was also fined 5,000. The FAI also hinted that Coughlans departure, ahead of todays deadline for audited accounts from all clubs to be at Abbotstown, may have come too late for the club to get a Premier Division licence for next season. Rather than talking of stepping down as chairman of Cork City FC, Mr Coughlan should immediately relinquish ownership of the club and allow in the parties who have expressed an interest in taking Cork City forward, an FAI statement read. Gestures at the 11th hour, when it could be too late to rectify next season are too little, too late. index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
