CLUBS Moodymann / Mark du Mosch / DJ 3000 rough One of the most controversial yet respected names in house music, Detroits Moodymann, aka Kenny Dixon Jnr (pictured), makes a rare visit to Dublin this weekend. Avoiding the media yet adopting a deeply political stance about the origins of his music, Dixons soul and jazz-sampling approach has won him fans worldwide and made him one of the most respected names in electronic music. Releases like Sunday Morning, Shades Of Jae and I Cant Kick This Feeling When It Hits are bona fide classics, while Dixon has also released timeless albums like Silentintroduction and Silence In The Secret Garden no wonder this show is an early contender for house gig of the year. Tonight, Hype, CrawDaddy, Harcourt Street D2, 11pm, 18. Having relocated to the Twisted Pepper, Lunar Disko, Dublins only night dedicated to Italo and Dutch electro, welcomes Mark du Mosch to Ireland for the first time. Hailing from Rotterdam, du Mosch, like so many of his contemporaries, makes spacey, disco- inflected house. He started to learn about production back in the mid-1990s from veteran producer David Spaans, but only started to release music in 2006. Clearly favouring quality over quantity, the Dutch DJs catalogue includes releases for key underground labels like Syncom Data and Moustache as well as an excellent EP for Lunar Diskos own imprint. A diverse DJ, du Moschs set is sure to include everything from obscure disco to straight up techno. Tomorrow, Lunar Disko, The Mezz, Twisted Pepper, Middle Abbey Street D1, 11pm, 6 to 8. New night Tenth Planet gets off to an impressive start with a visit from Detroit spinner DJ 3000, aka Frank Juncaj. One of the newer wave of Motor City artists, Frank was inspired by Mad Mikes Underground Resistance collective as well as his own Middle Eastern roots. When he started to release music in the early noughties, DJ 3000s rolling techno and nocturnal electro was quickly signed by esteemed labels Submerge and Somewhere In Detroit. Soon afterwards, he set up his own label, Motech, which has since released a series of acclaimed albums and EPs. Expect him to break the ice at Tenth Planet in slamming style. Tonight, Tenth Planet, The Good Bits, Store Street D1, 11pm, 8 to 14. Richard Brophy A wildly convoluted story involves an orphaned Canadian teen, Simon (Devon Bostick), who, encouraged by his teacher (Arsine Khanjian, Egoyans wife), pretends that his father was an Arab terrorist who planted a bomb on his pregnant wife. Why? Egoyans trademark non-linear narrative eventually reveals all, but doesnt entirely reward the wait. The problem is not over- complexity but the tone: simultaneously elliptical and overwrought. That Simons mother is played by Rachel Blanchard, aka the sex-mad Nancy in Peep Show, adds an extra level of oddness. Ambitious and stuffed with meaty issues, Adoration is the kind of film youre glad is being made. Its just not much fun to watch. Lottie Moggach Celebrity Big Brother: The Final Tonight, Channel4, 8.30pm Friday Night With Jonathan Ross Tonight, BBC1, 10.35pm The love has been sucked out of Irelands capital city in a new post-Celtic Tiger drama that wonders where it all went wrong. At times, the audience will feel the same about the film. Set during a working day in a Dublin IT company, 8.5 Hours dips in and out of the lives of four office workers. Tony (Jonathan Byrne) is the misogynistic rogue; Rachel (Lynette Callaghan) a damaged social climber; Eoins (Victor Burke) midnight skirmishes threaten his impending marriage; while Frank (Art Kearns) is having suspicions about his wife. Weaved into an ensemble piece, Brian Lallys debut explores the underbelly of human nature: a seedy sex and the city where romance consists of betrayal, revenge, and awkward fumbles in bathroom cubicles. The stories veer from the affecting to the preposterous and Lally works best when he lets the camera do the talking the dialogue is clunky, with all the characters routinely yelling and dropping F-Bombs. At 107 mins, the picture could do with a nip and tuck. Pavel Barter THEATRE REVIEW 10 Dates With Mad Mary If the popularity of Channel Fours Shameless and the plays of Mark ORowe are anything to go by, its fair to say weve developed an almost insatiable appetite for raw drama set on sink estates or in high rise flats where dysfunction and degradation are leavened by a few killer jokes. Told in a coarse Louth argot, Yasmine Akrams 10 Dates With Mad Mary from Calipo Theatre Company is a quirky, one-woman show that follows this bittersweet, wrong-side-of-the-tracks template. Akram plays the eponymous twenty- something whos earned the title mad thanks to her reputation for random acts of violence that include f**kin a desk at a geography teacher and attacking her half-sister with a beer bottle. After a six-month stint in Mountjoy shes back in Drogheda where her snooty friend Charlene is about to get married but nervous about the fact Mary doesnt have a partner for the occasion. Cue ten dates with a series of hapless, would-be boyfriends as Mary makes the tentative steps towards getting her life back on track. Akram makes for a convincing loud-mouth- with-a-heart whos as canny and wry as she is volatile. And if theres nothing in the plot thats really novel theres no shortage of offbeat one- liners and nicely observed moments Charlene, for instance, shops for a wedding dress at the wonderfully titled Bride Sally Bride while Marys invited to a Mamma Mia-themed hen party where shes asked to dress not as Meryl Streep but as Stellan Skarsgrd. Like the newly rehabilitated Mary, it makes for a production thats entirely charming if a little rough around the edges. Daragh Reddin Until tomorrow, Project Arts Centre, 39 Essex Street East D2, 8.15pm, 14 to 18. Tel: (01) 881 9613/4. www.project.ie So the seventh and final series of the ultimate celebrity car crash comes to an end with a bonanza two-parter. Will Vinnie win? Has it further deadened the careers of cartoon chav Lady Sovereign and ber-weirdo Stephen Baldwin? And just how gay is Alex Reid? Questions, questions. Sharon Lougher Kim Cattrall always seems to be the most candid and interesting out of the Sex And The City actresses, so heres hoping she gives good quote and eats flirty Jonathan Ross alive tonight. Shes joined by the cast of E4 hit Misfits, indie rockers Editors and gulp Jedward (pictured). SL
