The 56-year-old was accused of start- ing a smear campaign against Mr Sarkozy by including his name on a 2004 list of people said to have received bribes linked to the sale of French frig- ates to Taiwan in 1991. Mr Sarkozys name mysteriously ap- peared on the list of account holders of the Luxembourg-based Clearstream clearing house just before he stood for president. But judges at what was dubbed the trial of the century found no proof Mr de Villepin had acted illegally. The pair had been colleagues in the ruling government of former president Jacques Chirac but have become bitter rivals. Nicolas Sarkozy promised to hang me from a butchers hook, said Mr de Villepin during the trial. The re- sult may see him try to revive his po- litical career and even run against Mr Sarkozy in 2012.
