If you give 1,000 chimps 1,000 video cameras... THE worlds first film shot by chimpanzees is to be broadcast by the BBC as part of a natural history documentary. The apes created the movie using a specially-designed chimp-proof camera, as part of a scientific study into how chimpanzees perceive the world and each other. Primatologist Betsy Herrelko, who is studying for a PhD in primate behaviour at the University of Stirling, in Scotland, came up with the movies concept. She introduced video technology to a group of 11 chimpanzees living in an enclosure at Edinburgh Zoo. Ms Herrelko set the chimps two challenges. The first was to teach the chimps how to use a touchscreen to select different videos. The second challenge was to give the apes a Chimpcam, a recording camera housed in a chimp-proof box. On top of the box was a video screen that showed live images of whatever the camera was pointing at. Some of the chimps learned how to select different videos to watch. The apes are unlikely to have actively tried to film a particular subject, or understand that by carrying the camera around they were making a film. But the result, which will be screened within the Natural World programme Chimpcam, shown on BBC2 at 8pm tomorrow, may go down in television history. Stroke of bad luck: An art student fell on to the Picasso painting Student in frame after Picasso fall A CLUMSY art student stumbled over in a museum damaging a rare 91million painting by Picasso. The unnamed woman caused a 15cm (6in) tear in the masterpiece when she lost her balance and crashed into it. The 1905 painting called The Actor, depicts an acrobat posing against an abstract backdrop. Curators at the Metropolitan Museum in New York said the damage to the lower right-hand corner of the picture had not affected the focal point of the composition. The painting, donated by motor company heiress Thelma Chrysler, has been removed for assessment and treatment. It is expected to be repaired in time for a Picasso retrospective opening on April 27. A NEW web game in which girls as young as seven are creating minxes that adopt trophy orphans from places such as quake-hit Haiti has been criti- cised by a parents group. My Minx whose users can also give their characters morning-after pills fol- lowing a night at the pub sends out all the wrong messages, said group Parentkind. There are more than enough pres- sures on children to grow up already. We dont need any more, said spokes- man Andy Hibberd. Their parents will not have any idea that they are playing this game and the children will fail to appreciate its irony, he added. Having them getting virtual condoms or morning-after pills will not make them any less promiscuous. As regards child adoption, this game encourages them to think that they dont need to worry about morals or ethics. It is all just a bit of fun. With orpans named Pax and Zahara, the site is clearly having a swipe at celebs such as Madonna and Angelina Jolie. My Minx has attracted 20,000 members, some as young as seven, since its launch at Christmas. There are no age limits and players must top up their vir- tual cash via 1.50 texts or PayPal. It is harmless, tongue-in-cheek en- tertainment, said Christopher Evans of Blighty Arts, which created the game. It is nonsense to suggest our game is a bad influence on children, he said.
