HSE pays out 102,000 in diagnosis delay case THE widow of a 59-year-old Mayo man who died after a two-year delay in diagnosing his cancer has been awarded 102,000 in compensation. John McNeive was referred to Uni- versity College Hospital, Galway, in April 2003 but, despite having tests there and at Beaumont Hospital, Dub- lin, cancer of the neck was not diag- nosed until two years later, in April 2005. He died four months later. The High Court yesterday approved the settlement of the case against the Health Service Executive, who apolo- gised for the hurt and distress caused to the family. The court was told that the HSE ac- knowledged there was a delay in the diagnosis of Mr McNeive and that his family could have done no more to help him. The mans widow, Eileen McNeive, of Ballindine, Co Mayo, said the apology read by the HSE was most important to her but wanted to high- light their case in the hope that les- sons could be learned and that sys- tems within the HSE would improve. A payment of 25,000 for mental distress was included in the settle- ment.
