Referee: Mike Dean. man city 2 man united 1 MANCHESTER City last night moved a step closer to their first trophy in 34 years. They gained a crucial lead in the Carling Cup semi-final, first leg against local rivals United at Eastlands thanks to two goals from Carlos Tevez against his former club. The Argentina striker headed the winner midway through the second half when Vincent Kompany hooked the ball across the face of goal after United failed to clear a corner. City had been awarded a controversial penalty just three minutes before half-time when Rafael was ruled to have tugged Craig Bellamys shirt, although replays indicated the offence occurred outside the area. And when Uniteds furious protests finally subsided, Tevez stepped up to hammer in the equaliser from the spot. United had taken the lead in the 17th minute when Ryan Giggs scored in a derby for the first time since 1996 after Wayne Rooney met a low cross from Antonio Valencia which City goalkeeper Shay Given could only parry. Shaun Wright-Phillips nearly fired in a decisive third goal ahead of next weeks second leg at Old Trafford but was denied by a diving stop from Edwin van der Sar. And as United repeatedly pressed forward in search of an equaliser, Rooney was twice foiled by the impressive Given while substitute Michael Owen had a tame effort cleared off the line by Nedum Onuoha. The Clydesdale Bank Premier league side had not seriously troubled Ton goalkeeper Colin Stewart before striker Marc-Antoine Fortune cut the ball back for the former Derry City player (pictured) who drove past Stewart from 12 yards. From then on the visitors looked comfortable as Morton never really threatened a shock. Elsewhere, Rangers needed two extra-time goals from Steven Whittaker to finally see off the challenge of Hamilton after their replay ended scoreless. Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger admits Philippe Senderos could leave Arsenal to join Celtic on loan. The Gunners boss said: There is an interest from Celtic, yes. it may happen. Philippe needs to play. morton 0 celtic 1 ASTON VILLA boss Martin ONeill admits he will have to sell before he can bring in any new players during this months transfer window. ONeill, whose team face Blackburn tonight in the second leg of their Carling Cup semi-final, splashed out heavily in the summer. But ONeill said: We are not looking at players at this minute because we have to sell. We wouldnt be the only club in that position. Around 3.5million is set to be recouped from the expected sale of midfielder Craig Gardner to Birmingham. StOKe boss tony Pulis insists Wolves have not approached him about signing striker James Beattie. Pulis and Beatties bust-up last month over the players Christmas party has led to claims the 31- year-old could leave the Britannia Stadium this month. Pulis said: i would expect Mick to ring me if they were interested and he hasnt. Sources claim Beattie has already opened talks over a transfer, while Hull midfielder Stephen Hunt is another target. HARRY REDKNAPP has confirmed he is interested in signing Ruud van Nistelrooy on loan from Real Madrid. The striker has been linked with Spurs for some time and the Tottenham boss has now admitted to keeping tabs on the 33-year-old. Its interesting but it depends what the deal is, said Redknapp, whose team face Liverpool tonight. But any move may depend on Roman Pavlyuchenko, with Redknapp saying: I could not have five [strikers]. It is difficult enough with four. PORtSMOUtH are considering an appeal after their application to have a winding-up petition struck out was dismissed by a High Court judge. the club argued the VAt portion of their tax bill was too high by 7.5million, but failed to convince the judge. Another hearing to consider the winding-up petition will take place on February 10 and the outcome could send Portsmouth a step closer to becoming the first Premier League club to drop into administration. target: Van Nistelrooy soccerdigest Picture: Reuters index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
