We dont fit into one genre; on Waking Up, weve incorporated the influences of wherever we were, be it Japan, South Africa or Germany. We wanted to make a more cinematic record, and this hits harder. New track Everybody Loves Me stemmed from a jam session in a Johannesburg studio, while Good Life namechecks London landmarks. This album is a more up-to-date version of us, agrees Filkins, splashing mineral water at Tedder. Band meetings arent always a big fuzzy hug, but the best songs win. Tedder almost sounds apologetic about their path to success. We broke in a more mainstream way than wed ever planned, explains Tedder. Wed been signed then dropped then suddenly our single was huge worldwide. The song Apologize became much more recognisable than we were. Is it obvious that we have a complex? asks Filkins, dryly. T edders broad-ranging musical approach is definitely deep-rooted. I grew up in Oklahoma where it was non-stop country music, but I was listening to everything from Billy Joel to Pearl Jam and Boyz II One good song makes your career, and I made it my goal to be like a Swiss army knife lots of different functions yan Tedder is a major mover and shaker of modern pop. This 30-year-old singer/ songwriter is the frontman of OneRepublic (best known for the singles Apologize and Stop And Stare) and he has also co-penned megahits such as Leona Lewiss Bleeding Love and Beyoncs Halo besides collaborating with Timbaland, Paul Oakenfold, Kelly Clarkson and Pussycat Dolls. Currently though, Tedder is in a Wembley Arena dressing room; Adele and Frankmusik are loitering backstage to meet him while he and OneRepublics guitarist Zach Filkins are play-fighting like girls. Filkins halts, mock-outraged: We fight like men! he huffs. My special move is called kill- your-bandmate. In contrast, Tedders music exudes a relatively mellow, romantic attitude. The adjectives often used for my songs are haunting and real, he says. I dabble in dance music for fun, but for me the songs thatll stick around are the emotional ones. Less complimentary adjectives have included MOR, but Tedder doesnt flinch at the term: Id define MOR as everyday music not pushing the envelope, but effective. Hes also unapologetically clean-living, judging by OneRepublics rather spartan backstage rider. The fact that bands still ruin their careers through drugs and excessive alcohol is just ridiculously clichd. We limit ourselves to one line of cocaine a night, he deadpans. OneRepublics latest album Waking Up does edge into new territory; its a spirited sequel to 2007s Dreaming Out Loud that also highlights the outfits multi-instrumental skills. Theres an energy on this album that comes from having seen the world, says Tedder. R The OneRepublic frontman and songwriter to the stars talks to Arwa Haider about the bands second album and the artistic freedom of penning songs for other artists Diane Warren Oscar-nominated US songwriter Warren (pictured) started creating hits in the early 1980s and shes still going strong; her prolific catalogue spans epic ballads for Aerosmith, Cher, Whitney Houston and the Pet Shop Boys. Everyones a winner except last years UK Eurovision entry (Its My Time, fifth place). Max Martin This Stockholm-born hit-man is big on frothy tunes with a controversial kick. His Cheiron Studios have created smash success for US pop acts such as Britney (from her 1999 debut ...Baby One More Time to latest album Circus), Backstreet Boys, Kelly Clarkson, Pink (So What) and Katy Perry (I Kissed A Girl), and hes set to work with American Idol provocateur Adam Lambert. Xenomania Canny songwriter/producer Brian Higgins presides over this music factory, best known for defining the synth-fuelled sound of Girls Aloud, but also co-writes with Sugababes and Saint Etienne. Eg White A former British boy band musician turned indie maverick, and then in-demand mainstream songwriter. Whites credits have appeared on hits for Adele, Duffy, James Morrison and Will Young whose 2003 chart-topper Leave Right Now won an Ivor Novello Best Song Award. Linda Perry Perry specialises in pop with alternative undertones for the likes of Christina Aguilera (Beautiful), Gwen Stefani (What You Waiting For?) and Pink, who has also covered Whats Up?, Perrys 1993 hit with her own band 4 Non Blondes.
