D Friday, January 15, 2010 metrolife 17 :60second interview Interview by Andrew Williams Who is the best dressed celebrity around at the moment? Lady Gaga. She uses fashion for what it should be used for shes having fun with it and is original. It should be over the top. Last year at the award shows the one-shoulder dress was in so you saw 19 one-shoulder dresses walking down the red carpet. And who is the worst? Lady Gaga again. Have you seen her? I like some of her outfits better than others, put it that way. She makes Bjrk look like a nun. What are your personal style tips? At my age, ankle-length hemlines so my breasts dont peep out. Theres no point trying to compete with young girls. Theres nothing more disgusting than seeing an old lady in boots and short skirts, its all wrong. You see it a lot in Los Angeles. You can always spot a third wife, they always dress too young. The husbandll say: Oh sweetheart, I think. The bigger the star, the less they care. One year, Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman went together. Naomi was wearing a mustard colour and Nicole was wearing red. I said they looked like a condiment set, mustard and ketchup, but they thought it was funny because theyre secure. The ones on their way up get offended. You spent a few years making fun of Elizabeth Taylor. Are you pals today? We see each other quite often, we do a lot of work for Aids charities. I had a lot of great jokes about her when she was overweight. Id say she was wearing yellow and 12 schoolchildren tried to board her. How has stand-up comedy changed since you started your career? There are more women. I dont care if youre a man, woman or monkey youve got to be funny. Political correctness just makes me angry. Its ridiculous and has no place show those new boobs I just bought. What is the worst outfit youve ever worn? One year at the Academy Awards the designer didnt get the dress to me on time and I ended up wearing a navy blue dress with pink ruffles. It was hideous. Theres a picture of me and Mel Gibson standing in front of an Auschwitz exhibit and his SS uniform looks 100 times better than my dress. I thought maybe it would look dramatic but it was just horrible. Whats been your most extravagant fashion purchase? Maybe my Gucci adult diaper bag. I love bags and shoes. I have every pair of shoes Ive bought over the last 20 years. Ive started giving them away to my friend who is the same size but 25 years younger. Have you offended anyone on the red carpet with the things youve said about them? Everyone. Thats why I still do it. My job is to let the viewer know what in comedy. Were supposed to be the people saying The emperor has no clothes, not worrying in case we offend someone. My allegiance is to my audience. Whats been the highlight of your career? Getting the awards but the longevity too. Im always shocked that the offers are still coming in and Im 76 years old. Who is the rudest celebrity youve ever met? Russell Crowe. Theres no graciousness or humility about him. You can be talented but you also need luck to become successful and he has no gratitude. Ive interviewed him for various awards shows. I know a lot of things that hes allegedly said to people. Have you ever been attacked by an animal? I have three rescue dogs and Im the only person they dont attack. Ive either got a special power or they think Im dead already. They probably think at my age Im dead meat so theres no point. At my age I wear ankle-length hemlines so my breasts dont peep out. Theres no point trying to compete with young girls Joan Rivers Joan Rivers, 76, has been working in comedy for more than 45 years and has commented on fashion disasters at red carpet events since the 1990s. Entertainment Channel on Sunday Edited by Lisa Scott features@metroherald.ie Travel Top 2010 trips Going for it: Do you ever wonder where the travel gurus head while globetrotting? From new staycations to their favourite hotels, they reveal the hot destinations this year by EMMA STURGESS Travel writer Jonny Bealby set up adventure travel company Wild Frontiers in 1999 after trekking through Afghanistan and Pakistan. For details about the companys trips, visit www.wildfrontiers.co.uk Your top destination? Ill be going to Kenya as were planning to expand there. Eastern and southern Africa is a wild frontier with a stylish, luxury edge and wild beaches. All-time favourite hotel? Estancia Cristina (www.estanciacristina.com) in southern Patagonia, at the foot of the Upsala glacier, is one of the most spectacular. It feels like the end of the world. Will flying become a luxury? Yes and no. Relative to where it was 25 years ago, I think flying will remain a relatively cheap thing to do. Whats the new staycation? The new jargon is experiential. I hate the term but it does what it says. People arent looking for nice hotels they want something that moves them, changes them. Best January detox hotspot? I dont do detox but the nearest I get is a wonderful place in Rajasthan called Castle Bijaipur (www.castlebijaipur.com). Its a laid-back family-run castle. Tom Hall is Lonely Planets travel editor. His first independent trip was InterRailing through Europe at 16 and hes never looked back. Visit www.lonelyplanet.com Your top destination? Amsterdam. A new high-speed rail line has knocked 55 minutes off the train journey time between London and Amsterdam. Its now quicker than flying. All-time favourite hotel? The Wutma in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Its a budget hotel it has running water and thats about it but all human life is there. Youll meet people who are off to discover the source of the Nile, people you think are spies, people who live in Rastafarian communities. Will flying become a luxury? Probably not. But the aviation industry has a major challenge on its hands to make sure it remains socially acceptable. Whats the new staycation? I think this years buzzword will be babymoon. Its the idea that expectant couples can go away for a break before their lives cease to be! Best January detox hotspot? I really like SwimTreks (www.swimtrek. com) swimming holidays. Nothing makes you feel healthier than jumping into natural water. Kevin Evans is the co- founder of www. thetraveleditor.com, a travel website that gathers reviews of destinations, hotels and travel kit from a team of experts. Your top destination? Ive got my eye on Longitude 131 (www. longitude131.com.au), a luxury camping experience with views of Uluru in the Australian desert. All-time favourite hotel? Le Mridien Gallia in Milan (www.lemeridiengallia.com). It has old-world class and the best breakfast buffet. Will flying become a luxury? No, but I see the airlines focusing more on service. Everyone I speak to hates Ryanair. Airlines such as easyJet and BMI have a huge opportunity to get the service/price balance right. Whats the new staycation? I dont know. The awful summers of 2008 and 2009 have put an end to the staycation though. Best January detox hotspot? Id go to KaIngo (www.kaingo.co.za), a game reserve and spa on the edge of South Africas biggest game reserve. Its the unfashionable side, so not many people go there. Tom Marchant is co- founder of funky travel company Black Tomato. Visit www.black tomato.co.uk Your top destination? Ill be exploring the Congo, doing some rafting and visiting the jungle forests where there are gorillas. All-time favourite hotel? The understated Toca da Coruja (www. tocadacoruja.com.br) in Pipa, north- east Brazil (pictured), is really affordable and near a perfect beach. Will flying become a luxury? I dont think its going to get too expensive but the guilt is difficult. Whats the new staycation? Some customers like to be ahead of the crowd and were expecting people to do a lot more road trips and longer journeys. Best January detox hotspot? Mix altitude and exercise. In Britain itd be in the Highlands. Id also go to the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. v1 index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
