A MAN claimed almost 140,000 in state pension in the name of his dead friend for 23 years, a court has heard. The fraud was discovered when a social welfare officer called to the home of the deceased man to organise a special payment for his 100th birthday, and learned the pensioner had died in 1984. Patrick Mcloughlin, 65, of Ballyfermot Drive, Ballyfermot, pleaded guilty to ten sample charges including forging pension vouchers and theft at Upper Ballyfermot Post Office on dates between september 21, 1984 and June 1, 2007. Mcloughlin was captured on CCTV collecting gerry Donnellys pension at his local post office, where he also col- lected his own allowance. The court heard Mcloughlin stayed with Mr Don- nelly shortly before he died and had paid for his funeral. He said Mr Donnellys son had allowed him to claim the mans pension in order to recuper- ate the costs. But he found it difficult to remove himself from the situation once he had started. Judge Katherine Delahunt was told Mcloughlin did not own a car or his own house nor had he ever trav- elled abroad or lived the high life. she adjourned the case to see if Mcloughlin could continue repay- ing the debt out of his disability allowance. Judge Delahunt had already adjourned the case in July to allow Mcloughlin to attend cancer treat- ment. He was diagnosed with mouth cancer seven years ago and is the primary carer for his seriously ill wife.
