Charity umbrella group Dochas urged groups to avoid a cross-over of supplies and expertise flown into the devastated Caribbean state. Over the years, the Irish people have shown that they understand that when such disasters strike, immediate action is needed to save lives, said Dochas spokesman Hans Zomer. But sometimes peoples wish to act swiftly interferes with the need to act effectively, he added. Tom Arnold, Concern chief executive, said the agency received 200,000 in the first 24 hours, and that members of its emergency response team were already in Haiti to support relief operations. Concern said 29 local staff were unaccounted for, but others were rallying to support rescue teams. A website, HowYouCanHelp.ie, has been set up to detail how emergency relief works and how the public can help agencies.
