D Wednesday, January 13, 2010 News 100k fraud funded bank workers swish lifestyle A FORMER bank employee who came from humble beginnings de- frauded her employer of more than 100,000 after falling in with a swish peer group through her job and devel- oping a serious cocaine addiction, a court heard yesterday. Mother-of-two Susan Dowling, 37, made expenses claims on behalf of companies affiliated to Bank of Ire- land and lodged the cheques into her bank account and credit card account. Dowling, from The Park in Cel- bridge, Co Kildare pleaded guilty to 70 counts of defrauding cheques worth 103,000 between December 1998 and April 2003. Staff became suspicious when the accused sent them a company cheque to lodge into her account with a com- pliments slip reading personal bonus and a subsequent internal audit uncov- ered the scale of her offending. Garda Niall OMeara said Dowling had been dazzled by the city lifestyle during the Celtic Tiger years. The garda said he spoke to social welfare on the accuseds behalf after the discovery she lived in dire circumstances during the fraud inves- tigation.
