Why the utopian world of blockbuster movie Avatar is leaving fans depressed Reality check: Fans enjoy escaping into the perfect 3D virtual world of Avatar in China Picture: Getty THE utopian 3D fantasy world of blockbuster film Avatar has left some cinema-goers unable to cope with real- ity and even feeling suicidal. Fans of the film, which has taken mil- lions of pounds at the box office in the past month, claim they want to stay on Pandora, the fictional moon on which the films blue Navi people live. On the fan forum site Avatar Forums, a topic thread entitled Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible has received more than 1,000 posts. Ever since I went to see Avatar I have been de- pressed, wrote a poster called Mike. Watching the wonderful world of Pandora and all the Navi made me want to be one of them. I even contemplate suicide thinking that if I do it I will be rebirthed in a world similar to Pandora [where] eve- rything is the same as in Avatar. Another movie-goer called Elequin added: Its so hard I cant force myself to think that its just a movie and to get over it, that living like the Navi will never happen. I think I need a rebound movie. The forums administrator, Philippe Baghdassarian, said: I wasnt de- pressed myself. In fact, the movie made me happy. But I can understand why it made people depressed. The movie was so beautiful and it showed something we dont have here on Earth. Visual realism in the film is causing the depression, claim experts. It makes real life seem more imperfect, said New York psychiatrist Dr Stephan Quentzel. by Jo Steele
