D Wednesday, January 13, 2010 metrolife 15 Do divorced men often want to get back with their wives later? I think so. Men are literally lying in bed with their wives when the marriage is essentially over thinking Ive got to get the hell out of here and have a fantasy woman in mind. Then you get divorced, meet a woman, marry her and, by the time all that goes by, youve aged a few years and are ready to go back to your ex-wife. You want a woman who is sane and normal. A woman who is more like you. Youve gotten older. So older men dont necessarily always want a trophy wife? A certain kind of man does and a certain kind doesnt. Its sad but there are men who go for whatever their earliest ideal of a sexual partner was, they stay with that ideal, meaning men often lock into the image of the first girl they loved at 18. So they get stuck in an idea of sexuality with young women. Other men learn to see beyond all that. Whats worse than waking up with a 25-year-old woman, at 2am on cable a year or two later. Literally. How can you be entertained watching yourself? Is it true that you are planning to retire from acting? Yes, I think that by the time the contract for the show is over in a couple of years, I will want to do something else, maybe write some books. I havent travelled as much as Id like to. Acting takes up a lot of time and Im running out of time. You tell me all these women want to attack me? Lets go... Im kidding! Write down that Im kidding. And what book would you write? I wrote a book about my divorce (A Promise To Ourselves: A Journey Through Fatherhood And Divorce), which was a criticism of the family law system in the States. But, what do I want to write after that? I dont know; I need some time. Whats the best second chance someones given you? The TV show, because I did films and most of them were not good; theyre not you know what I mean? You want to go shoot yourself because you have nothing to say to her. Seriously. Your character is overweight but still attractive. Did you worry about your looks in the film? Well Jack Nicholson is a great inspiration. You learn that you just cant have that vanity. How do you feel about being a sex symbol at 51? I dont feel that way. Thats ridiculous. You must admit youve become very popular with the success of your TV show 30 Rock. For me, honestly, everything emanates from the television show. Its been very successful and people think its very funny. If I hadnt done it [director] Nancy Meyers would never have asked me to do Its Complicated. People are describing you as the new Spencer Tracy... Thats so funny to me. It doesnt get you anywhere. I try to avoid seeing any films Im in.You wind up seeing them bad but theyre not good. Most films come and go and are unmemorable. Then I was offered 30 Rock and I thought: I want to stay home. You may think lifestyle things arent important, but the older you get, the more important they are. With the show, I go to work at the studio and at 8pm they tell me Im done. I can have a life, as opposed to making movies, when you have no life. Has your daughter seen your film? No. But shes going to the Oscars with me. Shes my date. Are you excited about hosting the Oscars in March? It will be interesting because there are a lot of changes this year. Theyll have ten best picture candidates, which might open it up for romantic comedy. How do you feel about hosting with Steve Martin? Im glad Im doing it with him because hes done it twice before. If they told me I was doing it with someone who hadnt hosted it before, Id probably be in a mental hospital by now. Whats worse than waking up with a 25-year- old? You want to go shoot yourself because you have nothing to say to her. A gross generalisation? Perhaps. Yet their slimness is a fact. Today, in Copenhagen, chef Trina Hahnemann has biked to meet me in the city centre. Everyone pedals here. Forget cycle paths shared with lorries, its fitness nirvana as Danes cycle on wide roads purely for two wheels. As we ride swiftly, pushing her bike through the cobbled streets, she explains: Nordic cuisine is not mainstream in homes yet, not like in the Mediterranean. Clearly, it needs to be. Research by Professor Arne Astrup, a world authority on obesity, believes it could be more healthy than Mediterranean. The Danes, apparently, are one of the least obese nations. Only 11 per cent are obese here, says Astrup. The Scandi reputation for being beautiful, says Hahnemann, is mainly thanks to Viking troughing habits. In Denmark, we eat breads made from grains suited to cool climates: spelt, rye, oats and barley. White toast bread is here, but not so common you can barely call that food. And they embrace root veg. We dont just eat potatoes and carrots. There is beetroot, celeriac, parsnip, Hamburg parsley, Jerusalem artichoke and scorzonera (black salsify). Northern veg, such as kale, cabbages and Brussels sprouts, have some of the highest levels of antioxidants of any vegetable. W ith a new book out, The Nordic Diet, Hahnemann is on a mission to show other nations that they too can look deliciously good. After weve purchased various larder essentials, fresh bread from chef Bo Bechs bakery, spelt pasta, and some kale fatter than a small hound, we head to her house. I want to show you how we eat, she says. Theres a bijou banqueting table for sitting around in her 19th- century workers cottage. In Denmark, the family always eats together. This helps. As we grate and chop shes making beetroot burgers with barley salad, then rye pasta with kale and garlic she explains we eat too much meat: You only need one gram of protein per kilogram of body weight, so someone who weighs 72kg needs only 72g a day. Its only in countries where people are starving that they need more protein. And she advises that we share the chores so weve time to cook from scratch. You dont know what is in ready meals. No matter how hard we work here, women and men share jobs equally, so my husband cooks, too. Were the closest between rich and poor in the world. You cant be elected in Denmark, left or right, without belief in the welfare state, she adds proudly. So what are the magic ingredients of the Norse world? Berries (a free gift packed with antioxidants), cabbage, seafood, game and low-carb breads. Our lunch is long but its stuffed with light nibbles. Our rye bread madder is an ultra-light open sandwich, with a veal pat, seasoned with a bay leaf, juniper berries, onions, honey and maize. The pickled marrow adds zing. The beetroot burgers are nuggets of vitamins and the pasta with shards of kale is surprisingly delectable. To her island neighbours, who blame our lack of fitness on the weather, she retorts: Theres no such thing as bad weather just bad clothing. Were on a similar latitude. And as the latitude of the UK and Ireland is similar to Denmarks, it should be Nordic ingredients you grow, not Mediterranean.
