Taps are running dry in thousands of homes across Ireland, and the capital has been warned the same will hap- pen here if water is not conserved. Frozen and burst pipes heavily af- fected supply, compounded by house- holders leaving taps running in an ef- fort to prevent pipes from freezing. Environment minister John Gorm- ley said: There is no need at all to engage in this sort of behaviour, warning further wastage would force draconian measures to be taken. Dublin City Council said the ground will move as the thaw sets in, causing further damage and breakage to water mains and an increased loss of water. The citys water usage has reached an all-time high of 25 per cent above normal levels, with demand outstrip- ping supply by 15 per cent. Authori- ties have warned water pressure will be cut during off-peak times, which may result in a total loss of supply for higher areas of the city and county. Six tankers have been deployed to ensure water is available to the worst- hit parts. The big message is the dan- ger to water supplies in various parts of the country, said Transport Minis- ter Noel Dempsey following the latest Government emergency response meeting. The fact that people are using wa- ter, leaving taps running and so on, is causing serious, serious depletion of water stocks. If it continues, if people dont conserve the water, it will inevi- tably lead to cuts in water supply to different areas, he said. Reservoirs were ordered to shut down in Clare, Donegal and Wexford last night as they hit critically low levels. And warnings were issued in Leitrim, Meath, Kildare, Limerick and Westmeath.
