Crap. I knew I shouldnt have worn my muddy Converse, or the hoodie with the cigarette burn on one arm. Dillingers, in its previous incarnation, used to be Mint after all, a venue where the clientele wore Brown Thomas suits not brown Topman sweaters and where the proprietor was very likely to show you the door if he didnt like the O cut of your jib. Thankfully, it transpired our hostess was sharing a joke with her friend and our welcome, when it did come, was of the distinctly warm variety. Phew. If Mint seemed to many fussy and elitist, Dillingers is its antithesis. Staff are smiley, knowledgeable and - shock, horror really look like they want to be there. The interior feels very East Village (fitting when you consider the menu is American influenced), with one wall covered by a chalk board while a mirror on another gives the illusion of space. The menu is printed on sheets of lined, laminated paper la exercise books and theres a general sense of quirkiness about the place, right down to Sesame Streets Elmo dangling from the ceiling; he wasnt the only Muppet If Mint seemed to many fussy and elitist, Dillingers is its antithesis DINE IN THIS WEEK Your quick-fix meal solution courtesy of EasyFood magazine Not breaking thein the room on our visit, however the guy at the table next to ours harping on about his new beamer, for the benefit of the entire restaurant, soon had my toes curling. T hankfully, the food, courtesy of Temple Garner (former executive chef for Town Bar & Grill), provided a diversion. His starter of pan-fried chilli garlic prawns on chargrilled ciabatta was the first real winner of the evening: honking, oversized crustaceans on some seriously good fresh bread. Meanwhile, my Manhattan clam chowder, made with tomatoes, was robust and warming if not quite on par with its milk-based New England cousin. There were no gripes with the cracking mains though. His plate looked about to fracture under the weight of a hulking 12oz Hereford striploin steak which was so rare and tender had we Bacon And Sundried Tomato Penne Serves 4 300g penne pasta 4 rashers rindless bacon, diced 25g pine nuts 4 tbsp sundried pesto, plus more if desired 1. Cook the pasta according to the packet instructions. While you are cooking the pasta, fry the bacon in a dry frying pan until brown. Transfer to a plate. 2. Toast the pine nuts for 2-3 minutes in a pan. 3. When the penne is cooked, drain and mix with the pesto and toss through the bacon and pine nuts. 4. Add more pesto to serve, if needed. Tip: swap the bacon for left over roast chicken. www.easyfood.ie
