CRICKEt Winning putt: Stenson Good result for Ryder hopefuls Colin Montgomerie highlighted the importance of Europe making a winning start to a Ryder Cup year after leading his team to victory over Asia to reclaim the Royal Trophy yesterday. The Scot, standing in for Seve Ballesteros as the Spaniard continues his recovery from brain surgery, assembled a team mixing youth and experience for the event in Thailand as they looked to claim a third victory after losing 10-6 to Asia last year. The hosts came out on top in the opening days foursomes but Europe rallied in the fourballs to take a one-point lead into the singles. And, after Thailands Thongchai Jaidee bogeyed the last, Swede Henrik Stenson kept his cool to make par from six feet to halve the match and secure an 8 7 win for Europe. And, with octobers Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in Wales in the back of his mind, Montgomerie said: it was an honour to captain the team. We came here with a strong team and it was very, very close. All credit to my team for fighting. They all contributed at least a point out there this week and we did great. it is a very important year for European golf and this has been a good start for us and we hope to build on this throughout the year. u CHARl Schwartzel claimed his fourth European Tour title after carding a final round 67 to secure the Africa open title in East london. The South African ended on 20 under par and edged out overnight leader Thomas Aiken by a stroke. Darren Clarke was best of the irish in 28th on 12 under. GOLF Andriy Voronin has joined dynamo Moscow on a three-year contract from Liverpool, the russian club have confirmed. The 30-year-old striker, who spent last season on loan at Hertha Berlin, completed the switch yesterday after an unhappy spell at Anfield. Voronin made 40 appearances for the reds, scoring six times, after leaving Bayer Leverkusen in 2007 following 12 years in the German Bundesliga. The Ukraine forward said: i had options for continuing a career in Germany, and several in russia, but eventually opted for dynamo. i liked their professional approach during the negotiations and also the conversation with the head coach Andrey Kobelev. our views came together. dynamo have set high goals. i believe the russian league is of a very good level. dynamos sporting director Konstantin Sarsania added: We are delighted such a strong player has joined dynamo and we hope he can help solve the teams problems. With the tragic gun attack on the togo team bus dominating the headlines, this game at least gave people something positive to talk about as angola raced into a 2-0 half- time lead through an amado Flavio double. Gilberto and then former Manchester united striker Manucho put the hosts 4-0 ahead after 74 minutes. But Barcelona midfielder Seydou Keita struck five minutes later before ex-Spurs forward Fredi Kanoute cut the deficit further in the 88th minute. Keita struck again in the 93rd minute before Mustapha yatabare completed a sensational comeback. Togo shootings have no bearing on World Cup THe terrorist attack on the Togo team at the Africa Cup of nations should not raise security fears for the World Cup in South Africa later this year, insists the tournaments chief organ- iser danny Jordaan. Three members of Togos travelling party were killed on Friday, leading to suggestions similar problems could be faced in South Africa in June. However, Jordaan said: it has no im- pact on our World Cup. The world understands sovereign countries are responsible for their own safety and security and to say what happened in Angola impacts on the World Cup in South Africa is the same as suggesting that when a bomb goes off in Spain, it threatens Londons ability to host the next olympics. it is nonsensical for South Africa to be tainted with what happens in An- gola, which is not even one of our neighbouring countries. And Jordaan admitted it would have been unfair to expect Togo to contin- ue in the competition, adding: its tragic. Sport is not about death, its about life. if, mentally, physically and psy- chologically, they are not ready to continue, it would be unfair to expect them to do so.
