You shall have a cooked breakfast Put the organic porridge back in the cupboard where it belongs: detoxing should be about long-term improvements, not hating every meal. Stick to scrambled eggs, sauted mushrooms and grilled tomatoes on rye bread its a proper breakfast without the toxins. Detoxing is not just about weird juices but clearing the deck of toxins rather than going hungry, says nutritional therapist Sanna Anderson. Edited by Lisa Scott features@metroherald.ie Body Matters Pure and simple Detox commandments: Experts are divided on whether or not it works but men are joining women in the January health kick and heres how you can get yourself back in shape this winter BY OLIVER STALLWOOD T he very word detox is controversial. Not only is it overused but some health professionals say it doesnt work. But those who sit in the pro camp say more vegetables, fibre and vitamins can only be good for us. Still, men dont pay much attention to the idea. Its something girls do, right? Perhaps not. Here we see just how manly (sorry, easy) it is to give your body a break via our detox commandments. B yourself Brown rice, broccoli and spinach contain B-complex vitamins and give your detox a boost, says Kimberly Barnouin, author of Skinny Bastard, a guide to help men shape up: B-complex vitamins improve liver function and decongest the liver, while vitamin B12 improves liver health as well as metabolizing fats. You shall not overdo it The first rule of detox club is dont talk about detox club. The second rule is dont set yourself unobtainable goals. Avoid the fad diets and detox plans that inevitably go out of the window by February, says Ben Jones. Identify some key goals and take the steps to achieve them. Get in the mix Salt should be avoided during a detox but this doesnt mean your food has to be bland. Make a spice mix of tumeric, cumin, coriander and fennel powder to add to your food, says Kimberly Barnouin. Garlic will also help to remove heavy metals from the liver. Experts are divided on whether or not it works but men are joining women in the January health kick and heres how vitamins can only be good for us. Still, men Here we see just how manly (sorry, easy) Swap meat for fish Keep red meat to a minimum. We tell people to make meat ten per cent of their diet in the long term, says Lisa Miles, senior nutrition scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation. Oily fish is a high source of the nutrient Omega 3 and thats good for heart health we would recommend around two to three portions a week. Worship at the temple of Xbox and Wii When your girlfriend tells you to stop playing computer games, tell her its all part of your new healthy lifestyle. Key to any detox is eliminating alcohol a fact that puts most people off. Those games you got for Christmas will be a perfect way to keep you out of the pub and your mind off the booze. January is an ideal month after the excesses of Christmas your liver will thank you and so Have you ever joined a gym and never gone? Ive always been a member of the gym but I dont have a routine because Im somewhere different every day. I do a variety of classes such as yoga, spinning and aerobics to keep my body guessing. I love running, its a great way to focus on what I want to achieve and I enjoy singing along to dance tracks when Im running. It takes my mind off being tired. Did the right person win Strictly Come Dancing? Yes, because the public wanted Chris Hollins to win. He was their choice. Len Goodman has said there are too many contestants in each series. Do you agree? I just go with the flow, it doesnt bother me. Fourteen, 16 couples great. Im there to do a job and enjoy the show put on in front of me. The judges have the best seat in the house. I love watching people dance whether theyre good or bad I just like to be entertained. re-form. Were all friends and have a lot of respect for each other but weve all moved on in life. Were not the sort of group who would get back together just for the sake of it. What are your plans for 2010? Im going back in the studio to record my second album, Ill probably do another documentary, theres Strictly and Im in discussions to do my own talk show. Who would be your dream guest for your talk show? Barack Obama. I wouldnt talk to him about politics. Id ask him about food and what he does in his spare time. Whats been the most ridiculous promotional thing youve done? I did a TV show in Spain in the summer where they brought a baby leopard on to the set and I had to feed it milk in a bottle. Do you have any New Year resolutions? I dont make them. Whats the point of saying Ill join Did the criticism you received when you joined the judging panel bother you? It did in the beginning. No one likes to read negative press about themselves or have journalists camped on their doorstep thats never pleasant. It was something I had to work through. Maybe some of the criticism was unnecessary and too personal but people are entitled to their opinions. People dont like change but it happens all the time in life. The first couple of weeks were tough but afterwards it was fine. How did you think your former Mis-Teeq bandmate Sabrina Washington did on Im A Celebrity? She did very well she survived, didnt she? She got stuck in with the challenges and showed her fighting spirit, which all of us Mis-Teeq ladies have. Id never do it myself, though. I dont like creepy crawlies and the idea of putting bugs in my mouth isnt my cup of tea. Would you work with her again? There are no plans for Mis-Teeq to a gym or stop smoking or whatever in January? Why put things off? You might die at any minute. Act in the moment. What are the perks of fame? I get sent nice bits and bobs, such as mobile phones, but it isnt a regular occurrence. The main perk is waking up to a job I love to do each day. Whats been your most extravagant purchase? A 3,000 Versace dress that I bought on a whim to wear to a friends party. Ive never bought a dress as expensive since. Its beautiful but its not the kind of thing I could keep wearing. Ive got dresses that cost less than 100 that Ive worn more. You can buy a lot of amazing dresses on the high street and my stylist borrows dresses for red carpet events. Who is the rudest celebrity youve ever met? I honestly cant think of anyone. Im quite friendly to people so what you put out you get back. I wouldnt talk to Barack Obama about politics. Id ask him about food and what he does in his spare time :60second interview Interview by Andrew Williams Alesha Dixon Alesha Dixon, 31, started out in girl group Mis-Teeq.
