She has brought films as diverse as The Lion King, Pulp Fiction and Life Is Beautiful to Irish cinemas, and is currently publicising a comedy called Happy Ever Afters Interview by Daragh Reddin There are lots of stories to tell and many ways to tell them and there is plenty of room for all During your time at Disney youve been responsible for marketing a diverse range of movies from A Bugs Life to The English Patient. Whats been your favourite film? Thats like asking someone to name a favourite child. I love all sorts of movies from mainstream, wide blockbusters to art house or foreign language and our Irish acquisitions. The main thing is to know that each movie weve been involved with has received the release it deserves. As a publicity manager, youve worked with a number of A-listers over the years. Any diva antics along the way? Of course... Which celebrity was the easiest to work with? Any actor or filmmaker who is focused and passionate about the work and promoting their film is easiest to work with. I know you dont expect me to name names. Any you keep in touch with? Occasionally, yes. There are a few Ive met for dinner when theyve been here or helped them plan holidays in Ireland or visited them when Im in their neck of the woods. Weve already had CGI, 3-D and stop-motion. Where can animation go next? I dont really think of film as being either animation or live action. I see it as being very much a story that first and foremost needs to connect with an audience. Filmmaking developments are useful when they help make that happen be it because of the intimate intensity which 3D can provide such as in Christmas Carol or the highly moving, life-enhancing storylines and characters in Up. Whats your favourite Disney animation? It changes. I adore the old movies like Snow White and Bambi. When I hear When you wish upon a star it brings me back to when I was a kid. I have a soft spot for The Lion King as it was the first days after Christmas or in early January when we all need a lift. Is there a healthy sense of competition between Pixar and Dreamworks? I think there is bound to be a healthy sense of competition for want of a better word, between all filmmakers, producers and studios. They are all driven by the desire to make great movies and have them seen by the widest possible audience. There are lots of stories to tell and many ways to tell them and there is plenty of room for all. It helps create a diverse choice and variety of movies. Whos your favourite Disney character? When I visit the parks with nieces or nephews and I see them get all worked up about Mickey Mouse or Winnie The Pooh it really gladdens my heart. Happy Ever Afters is in cinemas Dec 26. www.happyeverafters themovie.com Disney animated movie I ever worked on and similarly with Toy Story which is the first Pixar movie I ever worked on. At the moment Im in love with everything Im seeing on a gorgeously sumptuous movie The Princess And The Frog because Im a big fan of classic animation. It has great characters; lots of humour; stunning music; great storytelling and a gutsy independent princess. And live action? It would have to be the Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy. Im also really looking forward to Prince Of Persia, due out this summer. Any interesting Irish movies in the pipeline? We have a screwball romantic comedy, Happy Ever Afters, starring Sally Hawkins (who won a Golden Globe for Mike Leighs Happy Go Lucky) plus Tom Riley and a raft of wonderful Irish actors. Its written and directed by award- winning Stephen Burke. Great fun and well worth a trip to the cinema, during those weird kind of boring 16 metrolife Tuesday, December 22, 2009 Q10: The Duckworth Lewis Method (aka Thomas Walsh and Neil Hannon) recorded a concept album in praise of which sport?
