METRO FREE Friday, December 18, 2009 FOUR bishops named in a damning child sex abuse report were last night urged to follow Limerick Bishop Donal Murray and quit. Survivors demanded all bishops based in the Dublin Archdiocese from 1974 stand down imme- diately after a State inquiry detailed hierarchy cover-ups of paedophile priests. Pope Benedict accepted the resignation of Bishop Murray (pic- tured), whose mishandling of claims against an abuser were branded in- excusable in the report. Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin, who stopped short of calling for more resignations, said he believed Bishop Murray did the right thing. Victims welcomed Dr Murrays move but asked why it took him three weeks from the Murphy re- ports publication to quit. Campaigner Marie Collins, who was abused as a child by a hospital chaplain, demanded the other four bishops based in the diocese go too. Bishops Jim Moriarty, Martin Drennan, Eamonn Walsh and Ray Field all had some role in dealing with the sample 46 priests investigated. Bishop Murray returned from Rome after offer- ing his resignation on December 7, and apologised to mass-goers at St Johns Cathedral in Limerick yesterday. I know full well that my resignation cannot undo the pain that survivors of abuse have suffered in the past and continue to suffer each day, the 69-year-old cleric said. I humbly apologise once again to all who were abused as little children. Bishop Murray, who stands down from day-to- day diocesan duties but retains his title, is the first senior cleric to quit following the Murphy report.
