Wings of victory: Sisso the swallow can fly again after losing feathers, thanks to a harness and a long bit of string Pictures: Rex Features By RoSS McGuinneSSITS feathers have been smoothed and it has been wrapped in string but this bird isnt destined for the oven this Christmas. Meet Sisso, a young swallow who is learning to fly with the aid of a specially made harness. He arrived at an Israeli animal hospital with one of his wings virtually missing. However, the brave chick has learned to soar since then with the help of some wool and a long piece of string which dangles from the ceiling. One member of staff, Dr Ariela Rosenzweig, took the baby swal- low under his wing, and the bird is learning to fly again with the help of basic engineering. To start his flying lessons, Sis- so is inserted into a fetching and very festive red harness. It is then attached to string which is stuck on to three spots of the ceiling using sticky tape. It is pretty rudimentary stuff but it does seem to work. The swallow is in good com- pany at the hospital in the Ramat Gan Safari Park near Tel Aviv, which also hosts big cats, ele- phants, reptiles and monkeys. And its latest attraction is aptly named. Sissos name is derived from a Finnish term that means determination or perseverance Flighty: Dr Rosenzweig and his patient 3-2-1: The injured bird gets ready for take-off index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
