Points system set for change a neW points system has been proposed ahead of the 2010 Formula one season. the idea has been put forward by the F1 commission, made up of key stakeholders from the teams, promoters, suppliers and sponsors, and chaired by president Bernie ecclestone. Under the proposal, the winner would claim 25 points, the runner-up 20, third place 15, fourth place ten, fifth place eight, and then sixth to tenth would earn six, five, three, two and one point respectively. the proposal, to replace the current system of ten points for a win down to one point for eighth place, will go before the World motor sport council in monaco today. Team manager anne Keenan- Buckley has high hopes of an Irish medal when the european Cross Country Championships take place at Santry this Sunday. Ireland will have a nearly full- strength team that include mary Cullen, martin Fagan and alistair Cragg. many eyes will be on Cullen, who took bronze at the european Indoor championships in march and finished fourth at last years european Cross Country, while Fagan is one of Irelands top hopes in the mens senior race. The team we have is a very strong one, said Keenan-Buckley. We are definitely confident of securing a medal ahead of Sunday. You have to be when you look at the calibre of athletes we have in the teams. The womens senior team is particularly strong, they have experience and are in good form. It is a case now of keeping our fingers crossed and hoping no last minutes illnesses or injuries hit the athletes and if they dont I would see us taking at least one medal if not more on Sunday. Leinster face the Pool Six leaders at Parc y Scar- lets for a game that could go a long way to deciding a competitive group that also includes London Irish and Brive. and Davies has labelled the fixture the biggest game the region has faced in three years and said his side will be inspired by a fired-up home crowd. It will be a special occasion next Saturday, lots of intensity, a big noisy Parc y Scarlets crowd and the more people we can have backing us the better. a big home crowd is important for us. Both sides know they have to win the game and the home ad- vantage is something we have to play with. and when our great Scarlets supporters really get going it can make a big difference. and Leinster coach michael Cheika, due to name his team at lunchtime today, is aware that taking the crowd out of the game early will be key to gaining a vital away victory. He said: Theyre a very passionate crowd and you know that youre going to be playing in a tough game. Were going to be in the lions den but weve been before, so we know that we can manage the crowd by the way that we play. Davies named his team yesterday and it includes seasoned internationals like Sean Lamont, Stephen Jones, David Lyons and former Ireland captain Si- mon easterby.
