is Fur And Away: Max on the back of one his inner-most imaginings THEATRE REVIEW The Gigli Concert JPW King (Peter Sullivan, pictured) is a Dublin-based quack psychologist whose shabby office-cum-bedsit suggests he hasnt had a patient in years. When a clinically depressed property developer, The Irish Man (Denis Conway), stumbles through his door hoping to realise an impossible dream to sing like the late Italian tenor Beniamino Gigli King seizes the opportunity to make a quick buck by agreeing to act as his therapist. But after several shambolic, vodka-fuelled sessions its unclear who, exactly, is most in need of help: the mentally disturbed business mogul or his shrink. Its hard to believe that Tom Murphys inventive, dexterous and challenging study of the desire for transcendence through art (presented here by Druid) actually premiered almost 30 years ago as its as fresh as any play thats graced the Irish stage within the last decade. As The Irish Man, Conway cleverly captures the many facets of a character whos at times bullish and impervious, at others a blubbering mess. Meanwhile, Sullivans King, who at first appears like a self- serving opportunist, soon discovers compassion both for his patient and his hard- nosed mistress Mona (an impressive Derbhle Crotty) though at the expense of his sanity. While the first act feels a little sluggish, the second crescendoes to a powerful, moving conclusion under Garry Hynes wrenching direction. The Gigli Concert remains a troubling tale of emotional impotence, longing and desire, which, despite its sorrowful subject matter, is ultimately inspiring. While the Berlin producer has been producing for a number of years, it was only in 2009 that his music received international attention. With releases on his own Fachwerk label as well as Clones Bassment imprint, Dehnerts booming, chord-heavy techno has found supporters across the spectrum. Of course, it helps that, as one of the main residents in Berlin techno institution Tresor, Dehnert has had the opportunity to road test his fusion of classic sounds with contemporary production techniques. Rest assured that hell rock Tests intimate home in the Twisted Pepper at his Irish debut tonight. Tonight, Test, The Mezz, Twisted Pepper, Middle Abbey Street D1, 11pm, 8 to 10. Marco Niemerski aka Tensnake may not be a household name, but his reputation is growing in underground house circles. Niemerski started releasing material as Tensnake in 2006, but his break came the following year thanks to an excellent, Italo- style EP for Players Paradise. Since then, he has put out EPs for Endless Flight and on Gerd Jansens respected Running Back stamp earlier this year. Niemerski is also a skilful remixer and has reworked Toby Tobias, Sally Shapiro and superlative electronic pop act Junior Boys. Expect his live show at the Button Factory tonight to feature stellar electronic disco, deep house and even some leftfield techno. Tonight, Nightflight, The Button Factory, Temple Bar, Curved Street D2, 11pm, 10. With just three EPs released in eight years, its impossible to accuse German producer Marcus Worgull (pictured) of being prolific. However, two of them, 2005s Texel which contains the Dragons Loop anthem and 2007s Spellbound were issued on Dixon and Ames influential Innervisions label and pre-dated the current fascination among German minimal techno producers for deeper textures. It doesnt look like Worgull is in a hurry to release a follow-up record, but in the meantime, he has remixed for the G Stone and Sonar Kollektiv labels and reworked US act The Juan MacLean. Get ready for an atmospheric, sensuous performance from one of house musics most elusive characters. Richard Brophy Tonight, Hype, PoD, Harcourt Street D2, 11pm, 12. ON MY iPOD Horse Feathers Justin Ringles five-track mix Better Days by Graham Nash: I absolutely love this record of his called Songs For Beginners. This song has an amazing feel to it and the line, though youre where you want to be, youre not where you belong, gets under my skin every time I hear it. Mother Natures Son by The Beatles: I have been obsessing a little over the new Beatles remasters and this song really stuck out while revisiting the White Album. I dont know if melodies get much better than this one. Engine by Jeff Mangum: This is a tune from a live album by the singer from Neutral Milk Hotel. I did a tour a year ago with just my violinist and we listened to this song at least a hundred times in the car while driving through Arizona and Texas. Beautiful, emotional song. American Hearts by AA Bondy: Great song from a great singer- songwriter. I really enjoy his whole record actually. Like Home by Muse Mcanique: Portland bands first song from their last record. Amazing textures and mood. I listened to this a few times while driving through Germany last week, and it just made sense. This would chime with the wisdom of Hugh Hefner: pondering the beleaguered golfers current plight, he maintains monogamy is not forever and that if youre a good-looking guy... well, marriage is just a convenience. Not an image a squeaky clean family man wishes to portray, surely? The Playboy mogul does not rule out splashing Tigers alleged conquests across his pages which, at this rate, could make for a bumper issue.
