He is in Dublin promoting Elsom Nutrition, his range of nutrional products, and to promote the Beacons Of Hope charity Interview by Adam Hyland If teams spend a lot of time and effort trying to stop me, they are making it easier for everybody else on my team to play How have you found your return to Ireland? It doesnt really feel like I ever left. The Irish rugby team is enjoying a golden age of rugby at the moment but what can we do to consistently beat the top teams in the world? As good as Ireland are, its very difficult because theres little difference in games between the top rugby nations. Very small things can be very costly. Some of it comes down to chance, but good teams pick up a habit of winning games, which is the opposite of what has happened to Australia recently. We have a habit of losing tight games. What was it like coming up against your Leinster team-mates when you lined out against Ireland recently? I had played a lot of them before in Melbourne in 2008 before I joined Leinster, and had played them twice in 2006, so it wasnt really that weird. Youve already won a lot of honours, but what are your ambitions for the future? The World Cup is obviously the big one, but thats a long way away. The big ambition at the moment is just to get the Australian team to become a very successful outfit, and also very tight. Those two go very well together. Unity in your team is great, but without success it means nothing. Tell me about Elsom Nutrition. I have very specific views on nutrition. I had trouble getting exactly what I wanted out of products. What I found is based around two things: If the product you use isnt quality, then you realise down the track that it is not helping you. The other thing is synergy amino acids and nutrients work best in groups together you find that in normal foods to help absorption so if you want a formula that works, you have to find what works best with what. Thats why we are developing these products. You designed one of the angels for the Beacon Of Hope campaign, which is on display in your finest ever performance? Sometimes you can have a great game but the match isnt important. I remember my World Cup debut against Japan in 2007 everything I did worked well. I scored a hat- trick, made good tackles, but we were never going to lose that match. In 2005, I was lucky to get a start in a match and I played really well that day. It was extremely important for my career. I wouldnt say I was on the scrap heap back then but things looked grim. After that performance, everything seemed to change. Youve been player of the year in both Australia and Europe do you think there is room for improvement? This is the end of a very long season for me, and I think I could improve physically. We as a team have a lot to do and theres still a hell of a lot more I could do better. For more information on Elsom Nutrition products go to www.rockyelsom.com. For Beacons of Hope go to www.angelsbeaconsofhope.ie Dublin at the moment and will be auctioned for charity. Tell me about that. Art is not really my strong point so I had a little help from the Dn Laoghaire College Of Art And Design. Its had pretty good success elsewhere and I thought it was interesting and for a good cause, and it was left open to interpretation. Back to rugby can Ireland win the World Cup in 2011? They have a good side and its not beyond them, but theres a lot of time between now and then. The World Cup is very difficult to win because you are playing away from home the whole time, and its a long tournament. Do you think you are singled out for rough treatment on the field? That comes with the territory, and its not a bad thing. It happens to players at different levels all over the world. But you think if teams spend a lot of time and effort trying to stop me, they are making it easier for everybody else on my team to play. What do you consider to be 16 metrolife Thursday, December 10, 2009
