Boy tried to save brother from garda car accidentA NINE-year-old boy made a heroic bid to save his younger brother who was killed in a tragic road accident, a court has heard. Gary Ward, who is now 11, tried to pull his brother, Dean, from in front of a garda car as they crossed a busy three-lane carriageway, the Circuit Civil Court in Dublin was told. Dean, who was seven when he died in the accident on March 2, 2008, had been crossing the road with Gary when he was hit by an unmarked garda car legitimately travelling in a bus lane. Justice Matthew Deery was told the brothers had left their home at Carrigallen Drive, Finglas South in Dublin, to visit their cousins house and had been crossing the N2 dual carriageway at Finglas Road when the accident happened. The boys had crossed between two lanes of stationary traffic and Dean had walked in front of the garda car travelling in the bus lane. Gary had tried to save his brother by trying to grab him but had been unable to stop him. There had been three passengers in the garda car at the time and from their evidence and that of other wit- nesses there would have been no chance of the garda driver having seen them running between the queued-up traffic. The Minister for Finance had made a settlement offer of 25,000 in the case. Garys mother, Yvonne, had agreed that 10,000 should be invest- ed in court funds for Gary, who had been badly affected by the fact he had been unable to save his brother. She also wanted 5,000 to be invested for their 16-year-old sister, Melissa. Judge Deery directed the payments into court and ordered that the remaining 10,000 be paid out to Mrs Ward to pay for funeral and other expenses. by ray managh model rosanna Davison gets into the festive spirit as she switches on the Christmas lights at grange audi, Deansgrange in Co Dublin Picture: Paul Sherwood feeling festive CElEbRITIES including Ricky Gervais and Scarlett Johansson are backing Oxfam Unwrapped this Christmas, which encourages people to choose alternative stocking-fillers such as goats or school books for families in the developing world.
