Acting on a tip, police intercepted a boat on the Bassac River just before it crossed into Vietnam. They found 1,655kg of snakes, mostly pythons, and 263 tortoises. Snakes and tortoises are rare reptiles in our country and are strongly prohibited from being hunted and trafficked, a police spokesman said. Vietnam is often used as a transit point for trafficking illegal wildlife from Southeast Asia to China to feed its market for exotic pets and foods. ameriCa: A man who mugged a 101-year-old woman on her way to church has been sentenced to 75 years in prison. Jack Rhodes was convicted of victimising three women, including Rose Morat, now 103. Authorities in New York City argued that Rhodes, 47, targeted two of the women because of their age, which is a violation of the state Hate Crimes Act, a law which provides for harsher sentences. Ms Morat, who uses a walker, was attacked as she left her apartment building and was left with a fractured cheekbone and bruises. Her attacker, Rhodes, got away with just $33 (21).
