Woods apologises for personal sinsTIGER WOODS last night admitted he let his family down and made an astonishing apology for his personal sins and failings. But he stopped short of explaining what exactly happened at his Florida home last Friday morning when he crashed his car into a fire hydrant and a tree, allegedly after a row with his wife, Elin. Full story: Page 9 and Sport, Page 29 THREE men have been jailed in Ro- mania for trafficking people to Ireland for labour exploitation. Remus Fusteac, 41, was sentenced to seven years, while his 21-year-old son Arthur Sergiu and 21-year-old nephew Alexandru Fuste were each jailed for five years. The three were found guilty of hu- man trafficking, running an organ- ised-crime syndicate, money launder- ing and possession of firearms. Garda and Romanian authorities collaborated to bring down the gang, which had smuggled at least 28 peo- ple into Ireland through Enniscorthy, Co Wexford including one child although it is believed there could be many more. The victims paid 2,500 to be smug- gled into the country on the promise of earning 2,000 a week when they arrived. Instead, they received far less, even though some worked from 5am to midnight seven days a week. Most of the money they earned had to be handed over to the traffickers. They lived in squalor, and were threatened, beaten up and sometimes held at gunpoint if they didnt pay off their debt. The gang made more than 100,000 in two years, until it was broken up by garda from Wexford and the Garda National Immigration Bureau. Justice Minister Dermot Ahern con- gratulated the Irish and Romanian po- lice, saying: Our aim is to make Ire- land a more hostile environment for those who might consider trafficking people into, out of, and within the ju- risdiction.
