Whats been the highlight of the past couple of years? I really enjoyed recording this album as I had more time to experiment with it than I did on the first. The best gig was the Isle Of Wight festival, which was the biggest audience so far and I played the best there too. Have you met any of your musical heroes? Its bizarre but the only people who I was really star- struck by were The Proclaimers. I was coming off stage at a festival and they were going on and said hello and I lost my s***. Ive been in covers bands and Ive played 500 Miles more than 500 times. What are the perks of fame? Getting free clothes for videos is good just because I know I wont have to go shopping, I get to keep some afterwards. Once I accidentally walked off set in the clothes and the stylist chased me down the road and literally pulled the coat off my back. daughter a few years ago and he let me play his organ. Whats the worst gig youve done? I did loads early on but I love support slots, which most people hate. I love having 30 minutes to make people pay attention. As an acoustic player I found that when I went out on stage everyone stopped talking, realised it was an acoustic set, then started talking again. Thats why I started talking in between my songs. It was harder for them to talk to each other when I was talking to them. You went to acting school, did you want to get on EastEnders? I was 11, I didnt have a life plan but I was into acting more than music to begin with. I didnt fit in at all. I had a BMX accident before I started and landed on my face so was known as freak child for three years. I was at a place obsessed with appearances and being smiley and I didnt have all my teeth. You injured your wrist last year, were you worried it would ruin your career? It was really bad, the surgeon said it was the worst possible injury a guitarist could have. I just slipped over and fell on my hand, nothing dramatic but I fractured my radius and dislocated my whole hand. It took three months to recover. Has it affected how you play? No, if anything it has improved my technique. Did you have to come up with an alternative career plan? No, I was determined to keep playing. I was planning ways to carry on performing even if Id lost the whole arm. Im playing organ bass pedals with my feet these days so I thought I could keep doing that. Whats the most unusual instrument you can play? I played the sitar a bit on the first album and I played a church organ on the first album too. I went out with the vicars Have you faced anti-ginger prejudice? Ive never hidden it. I have more hair on my face and head than most people. Im overtly ginger so it throws people off, theres too much of it for people to make fun of. I wasnt bullied for being ginger as a child, I was bullied for other things. Have you ever been attacked by an animal? I was attacked by a pig when I was little. My boot got stuck in the mud and this pig charged towards me and I feared for my life. It had proper tusks but the adults thought it was hilarious. It bit my boot just as I pulled my foot out of it, proper Indiana Jones style. Has it put you off pigs? No, I had to feed Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs when I worked somewhere called Fannys Farm Shop. I worked there for years. I fed the pigs and chickens, made cream teas, unloaded trucks and ended up playing my guitar to grannies towards the end. It was quite nice. I was attacked by a pig when I was little. Alls fine when said inhabitants are making toast (nine cyclists) but its heart-attack time with the power shower, which requires 78 cyclists racing at full pelt.
