ARRESTS involving a murderous gang of human-fat thieves was made up to distract from allegations of doz- ens of murders by police, it was claimed yesterday. Police in Peru recently announced they had arrested members of a mur- der ring who confessed to killing five people, extracting their fat and selling it to cosmetics companies in Europe. Medical experts questioned whether such a black market could exist, say- ing fat taken from the body of another person was useless. The allegations were pushed by in- vestigations chief General Felix Mur- ga and Colonel Jorge Mejia, head of the anti-kidnapping unit, who brand- ed the ring the Pishtacos after a mythical figure who killed people for their fat. The macabre tale of the fat gang set off a media storm in Peru. The killers were said to have cut up their victims and suspended the torsos from hooks above candles that warmed the flesh as fat dripped into tubs below. Gen Murga and Col Mejia said fat thieves were believed to be responsi- ble for 30 to 60 disappearances this year in central Huanuco province. But police in Huanuco discounted the fat-stealing theory, saying the al- legations made in the capital took them by surprise. District judge Kevin P Castel freed Gotti behind bars for more than a year on a $2million (1.3m) bond while the government decides whether to seek a fifth trial. It was difficult for me, Gotti told reporters outside the Manhattan court. I can only imagine what it was like for them. Suparwono is measured in Jakarta, Indonesia.
