I didnt know of any other comic novels that had a serious illness in them that affected the hero but its just part of life. These things happen all the time. Are you worried potential readers will be put off? Is prostate cancer funny? No of course prostate cancer isnt funny but people who have serious illnesses often deal with it by having a black sense of humour. Theres a lot of laughter on a kidney transplant ward, for instance. Adrians mum writes a misery memoir, are you a fan of the genre? No. How can a three-year- old child remember whole conversations and then recount them when they come to write a book in their thirties or forties? A lot of them are fake or hugely exaggerated. Why do you think its such a publishing phenomenon? People like to read about extremes. I used do. For the first time I missed all the characters when I finished this book. I almost felt like starting another Mole book straight away but then I came to my senses. I normally write them two years behind, so Im able to analyse real world events. Im very political so Ive had lots to be angry about over the past ten years we were hoping Gordon Brown would do great things but he lost his nerve, so I need time to let the anger subside. Have you been surprised by anyone who has said theyre a fan? I was surprised so many right- wingers latched on to the books. People saw the first book as an attack on feminism as Adrians mother Pauline found feminism, wore dungarees and stopped doing the housework. It wasnt an attack on feminism at all. If anything, it was an attack on her husband and Adrian. Adrian complains about a slice of bacon having fallen down the side of the fridge and thinks its a disgrace it to read endless books about polar exploration and the gulags. I wanted to know how Id deal with working in a gulag at 30 below freezing, and people did. I also read about concentration camps and wondered what Id do to survive. Jeremy Kyle pops up in the book and youre also a fan of Judge Judy. Whats the appeal? Im fascinated by her, by how she treats different people completely inconsistently. Shes completely deranged. If you write fiction you have to be curious about people and their lives. I used to wander around strange cities on my own, go down the back alleys and look and listen, I cant do that any more on my own. So to an extent I get experience from Jeremy Kyle and Judge Judy and from listening to my children and grandchildren. The first Mole books were massively successful. Was it ever a millstone round your neck? No, I always wrote other things and still stayed there for three days. How have your health problems [she has diabetes] affected your writing process? I cant see well enough to even read my own handwriting so I dictate now to my family my husband, one of my sons and one of my granddaughters. Theyre all in on the process now. Im in a wheelchair and cant go out on my own, I cant see where Im going and Im not allowed in the sunlight because of the steroids I have to take after my kidney transplant, but I still manage to write. I drag myself out of my bed, go downstairs, sit in my chair and dictate. Its still possible. It sounds quite exhausting. It was to begin with but Ive written so much Ive learned to edit as I go along. Its the most important thing a writer can learn. Not every word you write is precious. Sometimes those words are just too much or youve repeated yourself. The first thing a writer needs to learn is to keep it direct and truthful. I cant see well enough to even read my own handwriting so I dictate now to members of my family Sue Townsend Author Sue Townsends debut book, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 And , was a best-seller in the 1980s.
