Windows 7 users hit by black screen of death MILLIONS of computer users may be affected by a Microsoft glitch which causes their machines to crash, it was claimed yesterday. Dubbed the black screen of death, the problem creates a dark screen on PCs and laptops when the software system logs in. Windows 7, Microsofts latest oper- ating system, as well as older Vista and Windows XP editions have also reportedly been affected. Microsoft said it was looking into online reports suggesting its latest se- curity upgrade released last week was to blame for the glitch. The software giant has yet to release a fix, which would download auto- matically to a users computer, but said it was investigating the reports. Software firm Prevx said millions of people may have been affected and has issued a fix for the problem. There were no details on how many users in Ireland were affected but it is thought the majority are in the US. Users have resorted to reloading Windows as a last-ditch effort to fix the problem, said Prevx support en- gineer David Kennerley. If your black-screen woes began in the last two weeks after a Windows update or after running any security programme to remove malware dur- ing this time, then this fix will have a high probability of working, he said. by ross McGuinness Were all going just a bit Gaga on Google GOOGLE has released its annual Zeitgeist list of the years most popular search terms with Lady Gaga and vampire hit Twilight among the big winners.
