Like Blair Witch, this pretends to be found DV camera footage. In this case, its the result of when gadget-mad twentysomething Micah (Micah Sloat) hires a camera to record the spooky stuff thats supposedly happening at home according to his girlfriend Katie (Katie Featherston), who claims shes been haunted since she was eight. Thats your lot, plotwise. Every night Micah hooks up a night vision camera to record the goings-on in their bedroom (not that sort). And the invisible demon doesnt like it. You couldve mentioned this before we started to live together, Micah yells in a rare funny moment. Though fearsomely entertaining, this horrors not played for laughs, or for gore. Instead its all about creep-up-on-you, largely unseen, psychological terrors. Trouncing Saw 6 at the US Halloween box office, it shows a cheering hunger for something that raises goosebumps, not gag reflexes. What first-time, unschooled director Oren Peli does so effectively is escalate his low- budget bumps in the night. He lulls you into a reality TV- watching stupor as Micah films their banal daily life, then under-wows you with sub-Derek Acorah scares (a creaky door, car keys where they shouldnt be brr!), before bringing the freak-out factor to the point where your chest feels so frozen its like your lungs are clogged with ice-cream and you can barely breathe, let alone scream. Youll be sleeping with the lights on (and it still wont help mwah ha ha). Larushka Ivan-Zadeh 22 metrolife Friday, November 27, 2009 The hoTTesT TickeTs in Town Law Abiding Citizen (16) Running time: 109min Gerard Butler tortures killers and possibly audiences in this violent vigilante thriller. A disturbing opener sees Clyde Shelton (Butler) watch as his wife and child are raped and murdered by intruders. Cut to ten years later and Shelton is hell-bent on murderous revenge. Let down by the justice system, hes also targeting prosecutor Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx, pictured), a nice family man who once reluctantly struck a deal for one of the killers. Even being banged up in prison cant stop Sheltons elaborate and sadistic games. All very well if Shelton were played by Anthony Hopkins, but Butler is neither sympathetic nor sinister enough for this hokum to wash. Anna Smith Bunny & The Bull (16) Running time: 101min Winner of seven Csar awards (the French Oscars), this charmingly different biopic is a quality treat. Set in 1912, Sraphine de Senlis (revelatory Yolande Moreau) is a batty village cleaning lady who clatters around in her hobnailed boots, climbing trees and worshipping the Virgin Mary. When her guardian angel commands her to paint, she secretly mixes pigments out of mud, twigs and stolen communion wine, until her vivid talent is discovered by a German collector of Henri Rousseau with an eye for modern primitives. The story is unevenly told, but its a captivatingly unusual portrait. LI-Z Nativity! (G) Running time: 106min Martin Freeman is Mr Maddens, a grumpy, disillusioned primary school teacher who loathes Christmas. Charged with organising the Nativity play, he tries to impress a rival school, by claiming Hollywood will be in attendance. Its fairly easy to believe: Maddens ex, Jennifer (Ashley Jensen) is now a producer in LA. Snag CLUBBING Levon Vincent / Tony Lionni / Carl Craig 2009 will be remembered as the year that US house music resumed its pivotal role in dance culture and Levon Vincent, along with Jus Ed and DJ QU, was one of the key players in this renaissance. Vincents releases on Deconstruct and Novel Sound struck a chord in Europe, as they blended deep house sounds with the robust, metallic rhythms and dubby beats of underground German techno. Unsurprisingly then, the US producer has been a regular visiting DJ to Berlins Berghain and Frankfurts Robert Johnson, but tonight, he plays his Irish debut in the intimate Mezz section of Twisted Pepper. Given the space limitations and hype surrounding Vincent, its advisable to get down early to the club tonight. Tonight, Test, The Mezz, Twisted Pepper, Middle Abbey Street D1, 11pm, 11. From his youth spent dancing in the Hacienda to his recent rise to prominence as one of Europes most respected house and techno producers, Tony Lionnis life has been full of surprises. While he had been making music for years, Lionnis breakthrough only came last year when he put out a string of acclaimed records. The UK producers ability to blur the boundaries between deep house and techno, as well as his deep knowledge of electronic music, means that some of the worlds most respected labels, including Ostgut Mule, Versatile, Aesthetic Audio and Wave, have released his work.
