D Friday, November 27, 2009 METRO 11 BY ROSS McDONAGH Shopkeeper murdered as he confronts raider A MURDER hunt is under way in Co Wicklow following the stabbing of a shopkeeper in a botched raid. Father-of-two John Deasy was fatally stabbed once through the heart after confronting an armed robber in his corner shop in Arklow. Garda have released a description of the man who killed the 44-year-old before fleeing the scene with a few hundred euro. The killer is said to be 6ft 4in (2m), of thin, athletic build with a non- descript accent. He was wearing a light blue cotton mask, and a black or dark-coloured waist-length shiny jacket or wind-sheeter. Mr Deasy lived above Browders newsagents at St Peters Place, and is believed to have come downstairs to investigate a commotion. He found the raider demanding money from a female employee. He tried to tackle him, but was stabbed in the chest. Efforts to revive him failed and he died at the scene. Arklow mayor Peter Dempsey said the town was in shock at the death of a well-known and well-liked member of the community. Promising apprentices Jamie Kyne (pictured), 18, from Co Galway and Jan Wilson, 19, from Forfar, Scotland, lost their lives and two other young jockeys were injured as they escaped the fire in a three-storey block in the town of Norton in North Yorkshire, UK, in September.
