Rodrigo Tellos long-range strike in the 20th minute proved to be the only goal of the game and ended Uniteds 23-match unbeaten home run in the competition. With qualification for the last 16 assured, and CSKA Moscow beating Wolfsburg earli- er in the day, United knew a point would guarantee top spot in Group B. And it was Besiktas goalkeeper Rustu who saw most of the early action as United looked to take a firm grip on the tie from the start. Gabriel Obertan, Darron Gibson and Fed- erico Macheda were all denied by the former Turkey No.1 as the hosts dominated. However, when the first goal came it was United who fell behind as Tellos 30-yard ef- fort took a deflection off Rafael da Silva and beyond Ben Foster hardly the ideal start for the recalled goalkeeper. Besiktas almost doubled their lead minutes later as Michael Finks shot clipped a post. Michael Owen entered the fray midway through the second half as United looked to avoid their first defeat in this seasons competition. But two fine saves from Rustu late on, to deny Macheda and Wes Brown, secured the Turks a famous victory. The France international was picked out in the Porto penalty area by Florent Malouda in the 69th minute to settle a fairly uninspiring affair. It was Anelkas fifth goal this season and the first since he scored in the 2-0 win against Liverpool in October. Victory means Carlo Ancelottis men are unbeaten in Europe this season. The Premier League leaders, though, needed goalkeeper Petr Cech to keep them from falling behind early on. He was forced into a smart double save when keeping out Fernando Belluschis long-range effort and then springing up to stop Silvestre Varela from turning in the rebound. Argentinian forward Belluschi then beat Cech with a 25-yard drive in the 29th minute but saw his attempt cannon back off the crossbar. Chelsea created precious little to threaten Beto in the Porto goal until the 53rd minute when Anelkas cross was not cleared convincingly. The ball fell invitingly for Deco and he flashed a right-foot shot fractionally wide from the edge of the area but it was immaterial as Chelsea hung on. Stephen Hunt (pictured), Andy Dawson and Dean Marney all netted in the first half-hour. David Moyes men were gifted a reply just after the break courtesy of Kamil Zayattes own goal and Louis Saha converted a penalty but the hosts held on for the points. HUll 3 EvERToN 2
