Elephant parade: Life in the Samburu reserve Todays highlights With Adam Hyland Pick Of The Day The Secret Life Of Elephants RT2, 8pm The first in a three-part series revealing the dramatic and emotional lives of elephants in Kenyas Samburu reserve serves as a great introduction to these magnificent animals. It is fascinating to watch the lives of these pachyderms being played out, full of the joy of childbirth, the tension of danger and the sorrow of the death of a matriarch. In rare and touching footage, we see a herd mourn for the passing of one of their own. Rapair TG4, 10pm The series looking at rogues and robbers from Irish lore tonight takes a look at the life of one Ramonn hAnluain, or Redmond Count OHanlon as he was known to the British. A descendant of the famous OHanlon clan, his family were stripped of their land and titles by planters, then by Cromwell. OHanlon fled to France after a rebellion, and enjoyed success within their army, but returned to Ireland and became a highwayman. He robbed from the rich, but unfortunately seemed to forget to give his takings to the poor. QI BBC1, 9.30pm The most interesting programme on television is back with a new series. As ever, the learned Stephen Fry hosts the quiz show with a difference, and is this week joined by David Mitchell, Rob Brydon, Dara Briain and of course, Alan Davies. Subjects beginning with the letter G will form the questions and discussions tonight, so expect some talk of gravity, and some of lesser gravitas. 6pm 7pm 8pm 9pm 10pm 11pm :60second interview Una Healy Tipperary-born Una Healy is one fifth of UK pop band The Saturdays. Having started out as a singer-songwriter, she has since enjoyed great success with her band, with two Top 10 albums and playing support for both Girls Aloud and Take That on tour Interview by Lucy White Id much rather have gotten into the music industry the way Ive done it, by doing my own gigs, than to shoot straight to fame Welcome home are you the girls tour guide when youre in Ireland? I love being back here but theres just never enough time. There are so many places I want to show them, but some other time. When I first saw you, you were performing solo with your acoustic guitar to promote your Sorry EP quite the earnest strummergirl and now youre a pop vixen. What happened? I was doing that to build up my repertoire it was practise. In every other career you have to work your way up the ladder go to college to qualify for what you want to do. That was my college, to gain the experience in this business. I was then prepared for the audition with this band. They picked me based on my experience. And even then you had literally thousands of MySpace friends. I was doing quite well on my own but theres only so far you can go doing that. Its a great thing to do but to make it as an international acoustic singer-songwriter... there are not that many. Way down the line I might go back to doing it. But right now I think pop is more current, and what were doing now is right. At those early solo gigs, men of all ages were lining up to talk to you or have your CDs signed. Is that still the case or has fame made you less accessible in a way? We do public signings now but if anybody stopped me on the street and asked me for a photo or to sign something, Id always do that. Your fans are the most important thing. You wouldnt be doing what youre doing if you havent got an audience so theyre the most important people to keep happy. You need them. I noticed you were papped during your 28th birthday celebrations and drunk Una! headlines subsequently followed. I was having fun and letting my hair down, like anyone else on their birthday. The club tipped off the photographers so they were all her albums and play along to her. You were in 2006s Eurovision. Whats your strongest memory of that time? Yes, I backed Brian Kennedy in Athens in 2006. It was crazy, the whole thing was really full- on. Its a massive event, and everyone takes it so seriously. Didnt you feature in the first ever issue of Dublins Metro? Yes, it was on October 10 four years ago I remember the date because it was my birthday. It was a photocall campaign for Aware, the charity that helps fight depression. It was the very, very first Metro in Ireland! My mums still got the page somewhere... Highlight of the past 12 months? To be asked to do the Comic Relief single was a huge deal for us. We were very honoured to be given the opportunity to help, not to promote ourselves but sell records to make money for charity. Have you ever been bitten by an animal? I was bitten in the a**e by a Doberman when I was about ten. waiting outside. They love to get that shot of you when you look a bit drunk. I dont care too much. I want to have a life outside the band too. Are you glad you never auditioned for The X Factor? I never auditioned for X Factor but I did audition for other reality TV shows when the whole thing wasnt so big. Looking at how its grown now, Id much rather have gotten into the music industry the way Ive done it, by doing my own gigs, than to shoot straight to fame because theres only one way you can go then. Its a TV show, and it can be cruel at times. Its quite nasty. But then again the people who go on it know what theyre going to be put through. James Bourne of Busted fame wrote last single Forever Is Over. Who would be your dream duet partner or co-songwriter? Sheryl Crowe. I love her. She was one of my initial inspirations to write songs and play the guitar. I used to listen to all 16 metrolife Thursday, November 26, 2009 index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html24.html25.html26.html27.html
