Whether its been used as a workhorse with an engine, a tow car, a status symbol or a people carrier, few cars can claim to fill all of these roles with ease. Designed originally to plug the gap between the utilitarian Land Rover Defender and the more luxurious flagship Range Rover, Discovery soon became the niche vehicle for the growing demands of the family 4x4 market. Having revolutionised the mid-sized 4x4 sector in 1989, the Discovery evolved to reflect the needs and tastes of its increasingly urbane buyers. By 1994 range-topping Discovery models featured leather upholstery and wood veneer trim, and when the Series II Discovery was introduced in 1998 it added a new heating, air-conditioning and ventilation system. Since its launch back in 2004, the Discovery 3 has achieved global acclaim winning 111 awards worldwide. Todays Discovery 4 continues that evolution: Its design, stylish dashboard and luxurious interior offer an attractive and practical environment for driver and passengers alike. Happy 20th birthday Land Rover Discovery T heres some good news coming out of Cork for car owners with the announcement by Ford Motor Company that it will introduce the motor industrys first inflatable seat belts in 2010, in an attempt to enhance overall vehicle safety and provide better protection for back-seat passengers. Fords inflatable rear seat belts which will make their debut on the US best-selling Ford Explorer (pictured below) spread the force of a crash over an area five times bigger than conventional seat belts. This helps to reduce head, neck and chest injuries by easing pressure and reducing movement in the event of an impact. Combining the attributes of traditional seat belts and air bags, the new inflatable belts are designed to be deployed over the wearers torso and shoulder within 40 milliseconds of a crash. They are also safe and compatible with infant, child and booster car seats. In research carried out by Ford, 90 per cent of respondents also said the inflatable seat belts were more comfortable to wear than traditional belts a factor that could help to increase rear seat belt usage. The company plans to extend inflatable seat belt technology to all of its vehicles around the world. Fords rear inflatable seat belt technology will enhance safety for rear seat passengers of all ages, especially for young children who are more vulnerable in crashes, said Sue Cischke, Ford group vice- president of sustainability, environ- mental and safety engineering. This is another unique family technology that builds on our safety leadership, including the best safety ratings of any automaker. We hope that the new technology will not only enhance and improve overall car safety but will also encourage more passengers especially those travelling in the back seat to buckle up, she added.
