AN Olympic high jumper who had a German record voided because she was Jewish has seen the mark reinstated more than 70 years later. Gretel Bergmann, who later changed her name to Margaret Lambert, jumped 5ft 3in (2.2m) in Stuttgart on June 30, 1936. Two weeks later, the record was annulled and Bergmann was dropped from the German Olympic team. Now, Germanys track and field association has restored the record as an act of justice and a symbolic gesture. It also requested her inclusion in Germanys sports hall of fame. Thats very nice and I appreciate it, said 95- year-old Mrs Lambert, who emigrated to the US in 1937 and lives in New York. I couldnt repeat the jump today, believe me. Couple are denied a civil union A COUPLE who want to become the first heterosexuals in Britain to form a civil partnership said yesterday they would launch a legal challenge after a council refused their request. Tom Freeman and Katherine Doyle, both 25, who want the same legal rights as any husband and wife, applied for a civil partnership at Islington Register Office in London yesterday, but were refused as UK law bans opposite-sex civil partnerships. Pregnancy protein may fight cancer HORMONES released during pregnancy raise levels of a protein that blocks the growth of breast cancer, say scientists. Although the research is at an early stage, they believe it could lead to new treatments. It is known that pregnancy hormones such as oestrogen, progesterone and human chorionic gonadotropin reduce the risk of breast cancer. However, the reason why they have this effect is not understood. Part of the answer may be that the hormones trigger the production of a protective protein, a new study from Albany Medical College in New York suggests. Cancer- fighting: Pregnant woman FROM the outside Anthony Toths house looks quite ordinary but step inside and you find a big dep- arture from the norm. This airline nut has recreated the passenger cabin of a 1980s Pan Am Boeing 747 in his garage. His homage to the defunct fleet is so detailed he even has a real dep- arture board, aircraft seats, luggage racks, oxygen masks, safety man- uals and sick bags. The 42-year-old, who works for US carrier United Airlines, has spent thousands of dollars over 20 years to achieve his dream. I became obsessed with flying Pan Am because of the amazing cabin interiors, said Mr Toth, who built a model of the aircrafts inter- ior when he was just ten. The great thing about Pan Am was that it was so identifiable you could sit in that cabin and know exactly who you were flying with, added the fan, from Redondo Beach, California. His obsession even influenced his choice of house he picked one with an oversized garage. index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html24.html25.html26.html27.html28.html29.html30.html31.html
