The 37-year-old Brazilian national, of Lanesbor- ough Street, Roscommon town, had met the victim early in 2007, and they began a relationship. Ms Rosa, a 31-year-old mother-of-one had moved to Ireland some months earlier, and had began working at a meat factory in Ballaghaderreen. The pair moved in together, but on August 18 last year Ms Rosa left following an argument. She sought shelter in the nearby house of her boy- friends cousin, Valdivino De Morais. De Olivera went to the house that evening but was not allowed in. Ms Rosa refused to return home with him and his cousin told him to leave. De Olivera then spent the following day hanging around outside the house, and that evening asked to be allowed speak to Ms Rosa again. At 7pm, after consulting Ms Rosa, Mr De Morais agreed. The couple went into the kitchen and began talk- ing, but moments later, Mr De Morais heard scream- ing and Ms Rosa crying for help. He ran to the kitchen to find her sitting in a chair with a knife embedded in her chest, and de Olivera standing over her. De Olivera then removed the knife fled from the house, throwing it in the shrubbery outside. The court heard De Olivera brought the 22cm boning knife with him, carrying it in his waistband, after wrapping it in tissue so as not to cut himself.
