OFFER ENDS WEDNESDAY By CON DOHERTy Ireland is braced for yet more flood chaos Floods: Brian Cowen visited scenes of devastation across Ireland yesterday Damage: Ballinasloe yesterday Pictures: PA THOUSANDS of homeowners along the Shan- non were last night fearing more devastating floods after the river reached record levels. Energy chiefs at the ESB were forced to open gates on dams increasing water flow by ten per cent as they monitored exceptional flooding up- stream. Levels on Lough Derg were the highest ever with Athlone also suffering as the entire Shan- non system swelled. The amount of water coming in and speed at which it is coming in hasnt been seen before, an ESB spokesman said. Towns, villages and farms on flood plains downstream from the Parteen weir near the Clare-Tipperary border were expected to bear the brunt as localised flooding was already re- ported early last night. The worst affected areas were expected to be Montpellier, Castleconnell and Shannon Banks. Councils in Clare, Limerick and north Tipper- ary all warned residents to expect further floods and emergency services have been put on 24- hour alert, though Limerick city is expected to escape the worst. Taoiseach Brian Cowen visited the worst flood-hit areas of Cork, Ennis, Clonmel and Galway county yesterday, where waters had be- gun to recede, opening roads for the first time in three days. Theres a huge effort being made here to mit- igate the worst aspects of this. Thats very heartening, Mr Cowen said. The Taoiseach said funding for flood protection was a priority. But the Irish Farmers Association (IFA), which has warned of inadequate drainage and maintenance on rivers, demanded the Govern- ment pays out on farm grants after thousands of acres of land along the Shannon, Suck, Lee and Suir was inundated. Insurance experts are ex- pecting flood damage bills to run into hundreds of millions of euro. Meanwhile, hundreds of homes and business- es in Cork city were preparing to begin the mas- sive clean-up while up to 50,000 people re- mained without drinking water. Met ireann warned of more rain moving in off the Atlantic last night and today. index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
