Chic frontman Nile Rodgers deep funk riffs on timeless, upbeat songs such as I Want Your Love and Dance Dance Dance are a thing of wonder and he also worked as a producer for Debbie Harry and Diana Ross. If you missed their towering turn at Electric Picnic this year, dont miss this chance to experience a group who must surely be the most sampled in the history of hip- hop and house May 28, 2010, TriPod, Harcourt Street D2, 7.30pm, 37.50 to 42.50. Thankfully, it wasnt a case of dj-vu on my return visit. The Exchequer has shaken off its ugly duckling ancestry and turned into a bit of a swan. Out is the fuchsia sofa obscuring a much needed open fire centre-piece; in is a sculptural bar area, interesting alcoves, a mixture of booths and bar seating, and eye-catching urban art by Steve Kemp. While far from being chockablock which would be a miracle for a Monday lunchtime The Exchequer was far from empty. Not only did I spy two ladies of leisure tucking into a pie and a pint, but also a gourmet sandwich heading towards a peckish punter. But for all the barren tables, there was still a convivial atmosphere, the background music pleasingly unobtrusive. By-passing the specials menu, we launched straight into ordering our mains, most of which sounded hearty and comfortingly patriotic Desmond cheese here, Belfast Blonde-battered fish there. I ordered the steamed cockles and roaring Waterbay mussels with a side order of chips, the latter served in a silver punnet that was too small for its contents; the treacherous removal of stubby fries was akin to a game of KerPlunk. The mixed molluscs were fresh and tender (although some of the West Cork mussels remained resolutely tight-lipped), the parsley and white wine sauce a moreish, salty broth. My friend was also happy with her lot: two slices of black pudding with lean, slow-roast pork belly. The sweetness of the accompanying squash fondant was in heavenly contrast with the salty pork, while the lashings of mustard jus and portion of cabbage completed a I surprisingly light dish. Indeed, both servings were pleasingly queen size, making the demolition of desserts a walk in the park. My berry crumble was so tart I could barely taste the cold custard (but in a good way) while her fluffy, borderline savoury, chocolate mousse with a zingy scoop of sherberty raspberry sorbet was equally satisfying. Service was courteous throughout, and the bill left a pretty reasonable 51-sized dent including a blithe, blushing glass of ros. That the lunch and dinner menus are fairly interchangeable, including prices, makes The Exchequer a very attractive option for either daytime or pre-theatre dining. And best of all, they dont pair fish with fruit. Lucy White Central Hotel, Exchequer Street D2.
