Its also hoped the fast-track system will enable visitors to give evidence while still in the country and, therefore, act as a deterrent. The justice ministry is concerned the influx of 450,000 tourists will bring with it a surge in crime, and vowed to give priority to cases involving foreigners, either as victims or perpetrators. cypruS: The Greek Orthodox church is suing Turkey for preventing worship at religious sites in the north of the divided island. Lawyer Simos Angelides said the lawsuit with the European Court of Human Rights concerns 520 churches, monasteries, chapels and cemeteries. Past rulings hold Turkey responsible for the north because it maintains 35,000 troops there. Mr Angelides said the faithful cannot worship at those sites as they are either derelict or have been converted to mosques, barracks or clubs. He said Turkey committed ethnic and religious cleansing in 1974 when it invaded the island following a coup by supporters of a union with Greece. By roger WeaThers Gunmen massacre politicians familyPHILIPPINES troops found 21 bod- ies after dozens of gunmen hijacked a convoy of politicians and support- ers filing their nominations for next years elections. The victims, 13 women and eight men, were found in southern Am- patuan township, 5km from where they were taken hostage as they trav- elled in three vans earlier yesterday. The wife of Buluan township vice mayor Ismael Mangudadatu, along with his two sisters, followers and several local journalists were in the group, although he was not. He ac- cused political rivals belonging to a prominent clan for the massacre. Philippine elections are particu- larly violent in the south because of armed groups, including Muslim rebels fighting for self-rule in the predominantly Roman Catholic na- tion, and political warlords with pri- vate armies. The decades-long Mus- lim insurgency has killed about 120,000 people since the 1970s. But a presidential adviser, Jesus Dureza, said the massacre was un- equalled in recent history. There must be a total stop to this senseless violence, he said, recom- mending a state of emergency for the area to disarm all gunmen. Anything else will not work.
